4.5 because holy shit did I just INHALE this book. I could not put it down!!! I LOVE A REFORMED RAKE, loved seeing the active rake reformation! I love a list, I love TWINS! Such a strong start to this series i immediately want to see Nick’s book, I want Juliana’s book, I even want Benny’s book and am v sad he doesn’t get one! On the edge of my seat and absolutely in LOVE with Gabriel, it was kind of giving Sydrian. Her take no shit and his endless charm? Please and thank you

Half a star demotion bc I personally am not a fan of the unrequited crush/one sided admiration where the girl looks dumb until he of course falls for her etc. I like more equal footing but that’s me being annoying so it gets to stay rounded up officially.

i have too much social anxiety for this premise. callie im proud of you but reading about your adventures stressed me out

So much fun - well-paced and therefore hard to put down. And THOSE scenes were definitely hot.

there was a point when i opened the book and the idea of reading on wiped the smile off my face…but i will say that it had some moments. callie was a doormat who had so little self confidence it was grating on my nerves and gabriel was so sullen and couldn’t do anything right. it pissed me off that callie eventually settled for his proposal after he said he wasn’t sure he could ever love her because of his parents. i wanted more yearning from him and there wasn’t enough of his pov to convince me otherwise.

but this is a great example of why i like histros so much more than contemporary romance bc the stakes are so much higher. no one challenges each other to duels over a lady’s honor any more :/ i appreciate a good trouncing!

This book is considered a classic in and one of the most recommended historical romances.

Lady Calpunia is tired of always following the rules, she is doing everything right but she still hasn't been married. She decides since doing everything right doesn't work, doing everything wrong might.

Callie makes a list of things she wants to accomplish, the list contains everything a respectful lady must avoid. First on the list is a kiss by a man who is definitely not interested in getting married.

Her plan begins when she goes to Gabriel St. John's house alone at night demanding a kiss. He is a known rake, with a bad reputation and the perfect man to help her.

This book is a true delight, very entertaining with lots of charm. A beautiful written feel good story, perfect to enjoy on a fall day with a cup of tea.

I enjoyed this one more than The Wicked and the Wallflower--the characters, to me, were fleshed out more, and the chemistry between Callie and Ralston was certainly palpable. Even though Callie grated on me in the beginning with her "woe-is-me" attitude, it was nice to see her come into her own at the end!

I feel like I could pick this book apart if I wanted to. The plot is predictable, the hero and heroine are definite historical romance types, and the language the author uses gets fairly repetitive. (If one side of someone's mouth "kicked up" or the hero gave the heroine any more "drugging kisses," I was going to lose it.) I really liked this book in spite of all that, however, and don't feel particularly inclined to nitpick.

The novel's wallflower heroine, Callie, was likable and easy to relate to. I appreciated seeing her decide to set aside her passive, on-the-shelf status and take some risks in life. The rake hero, Ralston, was enjoyably wicked and witty, and his gradual realization that he actually could fall in love with someone and change his ways was good. The storyline wasn't all that surprising in how it played out, especially in light of the heroine's "crazy things I want to do" list that was obviously going to be checked off one-by-one as the story progressed, but in spite of the predictability it was an enjoyable ride. The dialogue was sharp, and the sex scenes were sexy. As fun, fluffy romance novels go, this was a good one.

A 3.5 star read, I'd say, perfect for some escapist amusement in the midst of a busy work week. I'll be checking out more of Sarah MacLean's books in the future, when I'm in need of a light read.

I'm not a huge fan of her more recent historical romances but I took a chance in this post series and I'm happy I did, way more my style.

It's quite possible this book has ruined me for all other Regencies. Here's why...

1. I love lists. I love to make lists, to check items off lists, and to read books in which heroines make lists. I may start making all of my reviews lists, too. Just because I can.
2. One of the best things about a Regency are all of the confines of the rules of the day. Usually, as readers, we accept them because the characters accept them. MacLean does a fantastic job of really delving into her characters' motivations, especially as they relate to the mores of the day. Callie is one of the best well-rounded Regency heroines I've ever read.
3. Gabriel is hot. And wounded. And hot.
4. Gabriel has a twin. This is, you guessed it, hot. *heads over to Amazon to see if she can find novel with said twin*
5. This novel has the best of both worlds: balls, shopping trips and a one-of-a-kind gown AS WELL AS Scotch, fencing, and duels. It's like your basic Regency and your girl who dresses like a boy Regency all rolled into one.
6. Best use of woman riding astride in a historical romance goes to....this book.
7. Totally charming secondary characters. I particularly liked Mariana, Juliana, and Benedick.
8. Witty dialogue

AND

9. Clue reference for the win. I suggest Tim Curry for the role of Davis.

4.5 stars. Maclean continues to be an absolute delight and this is up there with No Good Duke and One Good Earl as a favorite from her. Perfect, steamy vacation read!
