Child of Prophecy by T. E. Bradford is a YA fantasy novel with strong Christian themes. The author weaves experiences most teens face, like bullying, feeling different than everyone else, and first love, seamlessly into a fantasy adventure that crosses from one world into another.

Of all the characters, I enjoyed Laura's story arc the most as she had the biggest change of all. Without giving the whole thing away, I can say that she had an uphill battle to earn Quentin and Nova's trust (especially Nova's). Also, Mole’s unbalanced mind was eerily similar to what I imagine schizophrenia is like. And, the twist on the unicorn was pretty cool and unexpected. Lots to like in this book!

However, I felt that the representation of Christianity - like how one finds faith or practices their faith - wasn't as balanced throughout the story as I assumed when I began reading the book. This leads to a jarring ending, at least to me. YMMV though. That being said, I thought Child of Prophecy had everything I could want in a fantasy novel: adventure, magic, good character development.

This book is awesome. Anyone in their younger teens and up should love this story. I certainly do! It's simple and complexed. It hits the core of a very human issue that has no age limits, the problem with fitting in. From "magic" that's gift like, to the parallel to Earth kind of world the story is set in, this book is riveting, the characters endearing, and the only downside is waiting for more in this series. It works as an allegory for Christian themes, without pulling me out of the story. I am really looking forward to more of this series and thinking about adding it to my give as a gift list.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for this copy. (I'll be getting my own soon as I can!) A favorable review was not required, no compensation was received, and all views expressed are my own.

Her "gift" is one of the most powerful magics in existence. And if she's not careful, she could destroy everything.

Child of Prophecy has an interesting storyline and premise. The characters are unique and I really liked Nova's magic and how it made her different from others. She was powerful, but caring; emotional yet resolved to be different. And independant. I really liked her independence.

The story is quick paced and eventful. We encounter lots of action, dangerous plots, and twists with surprises. It took me a bit to understand what was going on in the beginning because we start off in the middle of the action and there aren't a lot of explanations. Over time though, everything starts to make sense and it's much easier to follow.

Also, this is a clean book. No cursing or sexual content. The action gets decently high, but it's definitely not gory. Overall, I enjoyed Nova's story and look forward to the next book! I give it 4 out of 5 stars!
