A dark and twisty read, indeed. This ghost story was full of inner dialogue and character development. And, it was suspenseful, but not too scary.

Saw the play, the film, and thought I'd best do the book. Enjoyed it very much. Lots of atmospheric. Deliberately read it in the daytime! At 160 pages it did feel a bit short and, as others said, the pacing is all over the place. Would be better read before seeing any dramatizations.

I had a really hard time rating this one. Once again I find myself stuck between a 3 and a 4. Rounding down on this one.

The story takes quite a bit of time to ramp up. I loved the atmosphere though, which kept me going. The writing is a bit dense, and takes some getting used to, and I think this kind of removed me from the story-telling, if that makes sense? Like I could tell that scene was supposed to be moody and creepy, but I didn't really feel that.

The plot, once it did get going, was great. The second half in particular moved pretty quickly, and I was definitely invested. That detached feeling did remain though!

Overall, I dug it, but I didn't love it. Maybe this is meant to be a single day read, which sitting on a porch in the fog?

This book was a perfectly gloomy and scary October read. The idea that what's so deeply disturbing about hauntings isn't the phenomena but the strong emotions surrounding them was well-executed and subtle, but still terrifying.
