Not as great as The Things They Carried, in my opinion, but still a powerful account of a soldier who disapproves of the war he fights in yet is left with no other option. Powerful stuff. O’Brien is one of the best war, and to an extent anti-war, writers of our time.

this is a great book about the horrors of war and it will help relatives understand why their friend or family member doesn’t want to talk about their experience. It talks a lot about the authors thoughts about running away and not reporting after being drafted. I will never be in his position and will never know how that feels but I just think it was too much of the theme in this book

I was looking for 19th century Napoleonic naval fiction, and ended up at this book, along with Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. This book is a memoir from before he recieved his draft notice until he was on the plane returning from Vietnam.

Tim's war is a terrifying slog in a series of disjointed landscapes, a synecdoche for a war he believes is wrong. He tries several times before going to avoid serving, and each time is disheartened because he does not have the courage to buck the army, or desert, or take the boat to Canada.

I really enjoyed this book. It has been said that it is one of the best books written about Vietnam, if not the best, and while I found it's good, it's not unbeliveably fantastic.

It's written by a draftee who served in in Vietnam in 1969 as a foot soilder and is a memoir. It starts with some great lines, I was giggling and then covers from the time he recieves his draft notice until the completion of his tour.

The author is meant to have written quite a few fiction books based around the American involvement in Vietnam that I will add to my TBR list.

SBC: Based on a soilder or war
