Nancy's Mysterious Letter by Carolyn Keene

This was a bit silly overall, a bit convoluted, and not as interesting of a mystery as some of the others I've reread. I enjoyed getting to see more of Ned, and Bess and George's beaus as well, but there was a lot of running around trying to find the mysterious Nancy Smith Drew, and I felt like this made the story less tightly written. Nonetheless, it was still a decently good time, and pretty standard Nancy Drew fare.

It's a little laughable how dangerous these mysteries are for Nancy, and how high the stakes can be (but then how well everyone in authority seems to cooperate with her investigations, and how well they're wrapped up in the end). They do lend a certain sense of comfort, though, that makes them worth reading. ...more

I feel like I need to preface this review by saying that I love a good Nancy Drew mystery and I know that they tend to be farfetched in a lot of regards...but gosh, this one is just wacky. It’s not even plausible on so many levels. There are so many bizarre coincidences that it doesn’t even feel like a real “mystery” because somehow, some way, things just happen to work out. There’s a random girl who falls into an inheritance and she just so happens to also be named Nancy Drew, and she could be anywhere in the world but she just so happens to be in the vicinity of River Heights for a special production, and of all the Wilsons that could possibly be listed in the New York City phone book, Nancy just so happens to get in touch with the right one....and the sheer absurdity goes on. Also, her boyfriend Ned is *both* the quarterback and the kicker for the college football team, which makes NO sense at all and as a football fan it irked me, LOL. Nancy and her friends buy same-day flights to New York to solve the mystery and I’m thinking...if they could drive from River Heights (a fictional town in who-knows-where) to Emerson (which is in Boston presumably, unless we are to believe this is a fictional Emerson College) then why in the heck are they flying to NYC which is only a couple more hours’ drive?? Nancy is rich enough for this frivolous spending, I suppose. ANYWAY, Nancy and Co arrive at the airport and Nancy is knocked out with chloroform in the bathroom but she still manages to catch her flight. I am not sure why the couple they are seeking weren’t on the same flight but ok. The girls chase down the other Nancy Drew and warn her that she’s about to be scammed, the bad guy is arrested and confesses at once, and the ending is happy for all involved. Nancy, I love ya girl, I do, but this one was just a little too cray-cray for me. On to the next one.

Out of all my rereads-- I have liked this one the least. Nancy is off in search of a different Nancy Drew and there really is no mystery as we know who the villain is from the beginning. We do get to meet Dave and Burt in this one-- so the gang's all here. Lots of Ned in this one as well. A quick read, but quite a few glaring errors and coincidences. Would be interested in reading the original one from the 1930s.

Well. Some Nancy Drew stories hold up better than others. This one was originally written in 1932 by an author who took over for another (better one? I suspect so) after the Depression led to lower rates for writing the books—and it was revised and condensed in 1968, so it’s doubly challenged as a result, I think. And the audio version is... let’s just say not narrated with a ton of vocal talent. But the story entertained my daughter and me on a long car ride, which is always appreciated.

4/1/20 age 9 - The story is about a girl who solves mysteries and crimes, named Nancy Drew. I loved it! I liked the part that Nancy found out that the letter that said "to Miss Drew" was not for her but for some other N. Drew. I did not like the criminal. He was VERY MEAN!
Words that describe this book: exciting, sad, heartwarming. It was exciting because Nancy almost got killed by a speeding car and when she found out that Ira Nixon got robbed!
I would recommend this book to Emma and Ellen because they both like mystery stories.

I remember liking this book more the first time. This time the mystery seems really clashed together with a bunch of different ends.
