Pilcher is an excellent technician and there are genuinely lovely little moments, but she also loves a flighty woman of mystery that everyone is inexplicably captivated by. However said flighty woman really came through in the end in a startlingly moving and emotional sequence. Face it, you’re here for the cozy autumn in Scotland vibes and it delivers. I suppose it’s harder now to be truly invested or sympathetic to the plights of the landed gentry, but you can’t argue with Pilcher’s skill as a wordsmith.

This was a long one! The first half felt too long - the cast of characters is deep and Pilcher’s success is in taking the time to spin out each character and develop their relationships with one another before the plot really gets going and all the threads come together. (It didn’t help that there were a few characters I didn’t like very much/wasn’t sympathetic to, so their sections were a bit of a slog). I think it did pay off though - the second half I felt very emotionally involved and things were happening! It is bittersweet to say goodbye to this little world. But TLDR this had the same payoff as the other Pilcher I’ve read but I felt the smaller scope of Winter Solstice worked better. I’ll definitely read more of her work!

I love the soothing tone of a Rosamunde Pilcher novel. Plot happens, characters develop, but always with a calming feel. In September, multi-generational families and friends gather in Scotland for a grand dance. Of course, old wounds are reopened and secrets are revealed. Read if you enjoy: family sagas, Scottish settings, multi-generational families, complicated relationships

I found there were way too many characters to develop them enough that I cared for them. I was confused for the first while trying to keep them all straight and their connections. And literally in the last chapter thought, “Jeff? Who’s Jeff? Did we meet him already?” We had. But he hasn’t been mentioned in so long I forgot about him.
It was slow for me. And anti-climactic as i felt it all somewhat predictable. Family dramas aren’t really my favourite so if you love them maybe this will soar a bit more for you.

I loved [b:Winter Solstice|116054|Winter Solstice|Rosamunde Pilcher|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347737313l/116054._SY75_.jpg|2067411] and [b:The Shell Seekers|37095|The Shell Seekers|Rosamunde Pilcher|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385213408l/37095._SY75_.jpg|517040], so much so that I literally saved this book for almost a year so that I could read it for the first time in September. Although I enjoyed it, I definitely felt like this story had a lot more of the bittersweet than either of the other two I've read by the same author. Whereas Winter Solstice felt like it was about redemption and new beginnings, September seemed to have more about endings and things it was too late to fix. I still enjoyed it, but don't know that I'll read it again.
