Slow start—I had to pick it up twice to get into it—but once it builds momentum, Theonite: Planet Adyn is an inventive, compelling story that had me itching for the next book as soon as I realized I was nearing the end. The book does a lot of story setup, leaving you with more questions than answers at the end of this part one, but this does not work against the way it pulls its reader in. Here’s hoping part two continues the story arc by answering some questions—the smallest of which for me is why does Daniel suddenly start speaking Hindi at the end there?—and expanding this saga-worthy world.
Real rating 2.5 stars
I genuinely feel like I read a different book than the other reviewers did.
It was a lot of exposition about the world Wang was building, a lot of telling and not showing, a lot of nothing truly happening until the last 20%.
If this was a middle grade book, I would be more forgiving. However, according to the author's website, this is supposed to be a young adult novel.
The stars I'm giving it are for a decent friendship between Joan and Daniel and half-decent world-building.
I didn't hate this book, not at all. I'm just disappointed.

Fantastic - loved it!
I laughed I cried. Great book! Well written characters! A plot that pulled me right in and didn't let go! I rushing off to book two immediately!

I love Wangs prose.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat, can't wait to continue.

I was excited to read this after reading the Sword of Kaigen but it was much less engaging for me, maybe because it was more of a Young Adult genre. High school shenanigans, nobody understands me, I can't be who I really am.
4.5 Star Rating
I don't read many books that are considered Young Adult and this one might even go as far as being considered Middle Grade. It is also drastically different from M.L. Wang's Sword of Kaigen but I already knew that going in.
With that being said, I truly enjoyed this quick fun read. I find myself loving the author's writing styles from both books I've read now. It was cute to see the young teen struggle of both Joan and Daniel and how different their worlds are from one another. There are definitely some very sad moments but some very fulfilling and exciting moments as well.
I've already picked up the next book to follow Planet Adyn and hope to get to it next month.
******Spoilers*******
Just to give a bit of background to this book, it picks up with a very young girl who discovers she has some amazing powers, she gets into some trouble with these powers and ends up hiding them from everyone for years as she secrets explores and practices with them and doesn't let anyone else ever know she has them since people hadn't reacted well when she was a small child.
The the Thundyil's come into her life. For anyone that has read Sword of Kaigen this was Robin and little Daniel (from the end of SoK). This is several years later as Daniel and Joan are both in their teens when they meet. I loved their relationship since they were both so different. I'm definitely looking forward to some more explanation of things in Orbit. I heard the author isn't continuing this series and further so hoping to get some closure at least even if we do end up with a cliffhanger at the end of the next book.

Not gonna add stars bc I read this book more to quickly extract information than to really enjoy it as a novel. No doubt Sword of Kaigen is much more refined than this earlier work. But still, I loved the chance to get to be part of Theonite’s world a little longer.
