the boys are absolute monsters. they were to busy objectifying the lisbon sisters to realize that they were in deep pain and had suicidal tendencies. it’s absolutely horrifying seeing how the boys aren’t even slightly aware of what’s going on.

A good book overall. A few parts were quite boring but I’d still say that the book was better than the movie. It says  a bit more about their grief and the abuse they suffered. The content might be triggering since it dealt with topic like suicide(duh), abuse, stalking and addiction.

I usually hate male authors, but the way Jeffrey Eugenides writes its just so real. Usually male authors sexualize the women just to sexualize them (John Green) but Eugenides sexualizes them not because he sees the girls this way but because everyone else sees them this way and that’s the whole point of the story. He’s just a good author. Plain and simple. The story is a sad but beautiful one. For me it clearly made the point that girls are only girls. That we can’t ask too much from them. That we can’t put so much pressure on them. That they aren’t always perfect and we need to stop thinking they always will be. That they need love and freedom and omg guess what?! They’re real human beings!!! Jeffrey Eugenides is an amazing author and I will be reading him in the future.

This is a deeply emotional book that takes on the struggles of being a teenage girl, while told in the point of view of the disgusting male gaze. I’m still saddened that I did not get to see the girls POV in their own story, but The Virgin Suicides is a timeless classic and must read to those who manage well with upsetting themes.
