Wanted to read the sequel to The Rosie Project.

More of Don to love, and Rosie too.

I understand that Don is how he is and it's hard for him to express his emotions and to read other people's emotions too, but this book really pushed that limit for me. There were too many times where Don was oblivious, more so than in TRP. And I felt that there were multiple instances in TRP where Don is doing an action where it is clear to the readers and then later to Don himself that he is falling for Rosie. There were much fewer instances (I felt) in TRE where Don was developing feelings for Bud. I mean, I felt like the end in particular was an acknowledgement of Don saying that he'd work on liking Bud at all but his focus was still entirely on Rosie. I hope to understand some of this book a bit more when I have kid(s) of my own, but for me, TRE just pushed Don too far in his seemingly unrealistic way of... existing.

The Rosie Effect is the second book in the Don Tillman series. I read The Rosie Project over the summer and recommended to a few others, so I was excited to get a hold of an advanced copy of this title. This one didn’t disappoint either. I really enjoy reading about Don’s antics and found myself laughing out loud at several spots in the book. Though it is never said outright, I assume that Don is on the Autism Spectrum…specifically Asperger’s Syndrome seems likely. I am, obviously, not an expert and could never diagnose, but that’s my impression and that’s the only point of reading a book, right? Being able to make your own assumptions and view the characters how you see them. Graeme Simsion really does a great job of showing you what it must be like in the head of someone who is very socially awkward, along with many other quirks. The writing doesn’t just explain funny situations, it really lets you see what Don is thinking as they are happening and shows you his logic in the thinking. Again, I found myself laughing out loud and sometimes even cringing for him. :) Anyway, this story focuses on Rosie and Don after their marriage and when they find out they are expecting…without planning it! If you have read the first book, you know how much of a planner Don is, so this throws his whole world out of orbit. They suffer from a lack of communication and I found myself worrying about their relationship throughout the story. I was emotionally invested in these characters, so I wanted things to work for them. We also get to see a lot of the characters from Book 1 and meet some new endearing ones as well. It is hard to say much more without divulging too much info, so I will keep this short. I will add this to my library as well so I can recommend it to my coworkers and the students I have that do like to read adult books.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @38%. I really tried but everyone telling everyone to lie to their partners because the alternative is "stress" just became too much. There was not enough for an actual plot here and listening to both people's idiot thoughts on having a baby just began to grate.

Very cute story continuation! Love the writing of the characters and the development of Don!

Like many before me this book did not survive it's sophomore outing. Don's personality did not come off quirky and charming like it did in the original. It came off annoying. There was too little Rosie in this book to balance it out and soften the roughness. I think this would have worked better for me had I read the second book much closer to reading the first book. Instead it was many years between the two and I did not enjoy the story line.

Well, I guess no-one needs to pretend not knowing what sort of bombshell life drops on poor Don Tillman in this sequence to The Rosie Project. Anyone can have a pretty good idea and I can tell you that what you are thinking is probably right. But to keep the review spoiler-free, I won't actually write what it is.

As to the book itself, I was rather excited to continue my acquaintance with the two main characters, but on some level ended up a bit disappointed. Yes, it is still Don Tillman for whom the world is one big challenge and awkward situations pop-up constantly... but at some point in the book I felt that things are being overcomplicated even for Don. For me the story just started loosing some components of credibility. I don't know if the author decided to go all out in all American style (I know, I'm being stereotypical right now... but this is what Hollywood movies make us believe) with crazy and impossible things leading to rather cheesy ending. But by no means it isn't a bad book, it just in my opinion didn't live up to the expectations and standard set by the first one. Still a good read ;)

Cute. As in the first book, Don is an incredibly quirky and endearing character.

Perfection, just like the first book. Parts are predictable but in a satisfying way, and the plot is full of surprises.
