this was a cute middle grade read with great discussions of gender. i liked the way it was told with a split perspective that changed 50% in from one mc to the other. i do think the “chapters” or rather the different days were really inconsistent in length and content, and that made it feel like there were big gaps/holes in the plot. i did really like both essie and ollie though!!

This book was cute, but not my favorite non-binary rep middle grade. It was a little lacking in character development and I didn’t feel a connection to either of the MC’s. The “conflicts” were never really talked about, they just magically resolved themselves which I felt could’ve been better (especially for younger readers that this book is aimed towards) to see these young teenagers learning to speak with their friends and solve conflicts instead of ignoring them.

no five stars because i have a few things:
1) ollie(they/them) is afab and it kind of defines their non-binary identity which annoys me because it pushes the idea of that being non-binary you must be afab.
2) was not expecting to have two part where one is from essie’s and the other is from ollie’s. something clearer would have been nice.
3) continued with ollie’s identity- it forces essie to find her sexuality when fun fact straight people could date a non-binary person.
4) another thought on ollie’s identity. they didn’t even really hide that they’re afab. like essie is in the girls locker and is like wait that’s ollie. so:/ wish there was mystery like there is/was with annabella(who has an amazing name)
i think overall this book would be good for a middle schooler who doesn’t fully understand gender identity and is maybe questioning themself. my sister doesn’t read otherwise i would make her read this.
