The Emperor and The Endless Palace flows through 3 different time periods: 4 BCE, 1740, and the present day. The most unique thing about these time periods, is they are following the same characters that are reincarnated and find each other in each lifetime.
There were moments of the different timelines I found flowed very well, but there were other moments that felt disjointed and all over the place. I would begin to think I had figured out what was going on but then a chapter would throw me for a loop. This novel had me guessing until the very end.
The novel is marketed as a romance book, but it did not feel like a romance story. It more a story of obsession. It was a lot more erotic than I had anticipated, like a lot more. That doesn't typically bother me, but some of the words used to describe body parts had me cringing.
I found the beginning of the novel really well done but there were moments that lost me. Overall, I did enjoy this book and I enjoyed the concept of reincarnation and a love story, but I think had it flowed better I would have liked it that much more.

Ugh open ending breaking my heart! I need more! All the pieces coming together about 3/4s of the way through was so good! This book was a delightful ride through history. I do feel like several things could have been fleshed out more, especially the Nine Tailed Fox and what exactly was going on with Grandma.
Calvin deserves so much better! I adored Calvin and it really felt like he was part of the reincarnation cycle but he wasn't. I also feel like Dong Xian did not love the emperor's cousin, the cousin just coveted him
A time weaving, unapologetically gay, story about love and also hurt (not a romance to me with the violence and manipulation across timelines). I appreciate the authors love of a euphemism during the erotica moments but I did tire a bit of them lol It’s hard to put a feeling on how I am feeling at the end of this but I am glad I read it and will happily pick up whatever the author puts out next.

the ambiguity of the ending left me for wanting, but that feels intentional— River and Joey both left wanting too. a heartbreakingly beautiful triadic story about the nature of love.
