I put it down and had no interest in completing it, I need to let this one go before I slump really hard.

Despite hitting a lot of points of interest, I found the description a little misleading, the connection a little too physical and less the kindred spirit star crossed romance I expected. Furthermore, I don’t think that m/m queer romance is targeted toward myself, and despite my openness, this one just didn’t hit the mark.

This was a weird one to rate for me. While I loved the interconnected story and pretty writing the very matter of fact smut was a bit off putting at times. Though I will say it had some of the more creative euphemisms I’ve read, and they fit the story and characters well. I don’t necessarily mind sex as a plot or character building device as opposed to romance, but it was just a little too casually written here for me.

I also think I would have liked for it to have leaned more into the magical aspects and romance. By the end I was a bit confused about what the actual point was and if the two central character actually should be together. As is it feels incomplete, like it wasn’t sure what genre it wanted to be. The modern day stuff especially didn’t really fit with the rest and kind of felt like an author self insert fantasy.

Unfortunately I think after reading this, and some of TJ Klune’s books, I much prefer sex (even gay sex) written by women.

"Just because it's true, doesn't mean it's good." I loved the break in traditional forms, I loved the queerness. I love that this book believes in love but believes in healthy love more.

This was a wild ride. I learned a lot about different facets of Chinese culture and lore which is always exciting. Turns out we're all just bodies of emotions and wants.

I'll be thinking of this one for a moment.

this had three interwoven parts that needed more expositions and engaging characterization to keep me hooked on all three but … i don’t think it succeeded. two across time and space may have worked, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ plus i did have some background already on ninetales lore.

many thanks to harlequin trade publishing, MIRA, and netgalley for the advance reader copy. this title is available now.

This was such an easy book to read because of the author’s writing style, but it is such a hard book to review because of its uniqueness and its non-conformance to the various genres it represents. Yes, it’s a historical novel because two of its three storylines are set in the past – one over 2000 years ago and the other about 300 years ago. However, the author fails to give his readers anything to tether their sense of the time to, thus making it had to a feel of the setting.

Yes, it’s a fantasy complete with monsters and blue cats, etc. But the middle timeline has more fantasy than the other two timelines.

Nevertheless, this book is a well-written with characters readers can love and hate – sometimes at the same time – and a ton of twists and turns. It also has an ending that will surprise readers who knew how it would end, but find themselves unexpectedly surprised by the ending.

Caveats: This is most certainly a LGBTQ+ novel with a lot of M/M sex. It is a novel about reincarnation and all that that entails. If either of these subjects tend to disturb you, do not pick this book up.

My thanks to Mira and Edelweiss for an eARC.
