Still love the artwork of this series! Its still confusing and crazy but not in a bad way. We learnt some more about the Monster and the Halfwolf's pasts. We got shown a mysterious island and its even more mysterious inhabitants as well as a pirate crew. What's not to love.

I liked this volume better than the first. I felt like the story was more structured and cohesive in this one than in volume one.
The swearing still bugs me, but at least the cat infodumps at the end of each chapter weren't as tedious to read this time around.

A great continuation of the story; the pirate/haunted island setting alone is enough fun to make this a worthy addition to the first volume. The pace of learning more about Maika's backstory is slow but continuous, which always make me interested to keep going.

A great continuation. I'm super excited for what's coming next.

It's good, just not my cup of tea

OH MY GOD THE ART

This world is very complex, it can be overwhelming at times.

Overall stronger than the first volume, and Sana Takeda's art deserves all the stars. As do the cats. The cats are the best.

My only quibble is the speed at which plot relevant world history unfolds; there were several times I wanted to stop and check for a wiki. Is there a Monstress wiki? If not, there should be, because the world building is that complex and Professor's Tam Tam's interludes only seem to touch on a small portion of it.

Good thing #3 is coming out this year!

Cats are the great mystery, born in that space where shadow meets light. . . that borderland of dreams and death, and death and life. No door is closed against us. No secret can defy us. We exist in every world, every universe, every possibility. We cannot be denied, not even by the dead. We are magnificent, Ren Mormorian. We are fucking glorious.

Probably Marjorie Liu is a cat person. Also, there is no universe in which I will not get a kick out of "nekomancer."

Edit: there is a wiki!

The world expands, the art dazzles, the writing surprises.

I read this in single issues. There's a lot of fun stuff here but it got a bit confusing. The story is very compressed and there's a TON of characters, factions & mythology to try to keep in my head. I imagine it will read better in trade. In fact, I get the feeling this whole series will read better in giant omnibus collecting the whole run.
