As someone who grew up in Boston, I was well versed in the history leading up to the Revolutionary War, but my grasp of the events that occurred after the British evacuated Boston was not nearly as good. This book does a great job of telling the story of the year 1776, with particular focus on the Continental Army under George Washington. The author uses a range of primary sources to paint a detailed and complex picture of Washington as a war leader, with considerable attention also given to Washington's officers.
The author also explores the conflict from the British side, covering events back in England, and the decisions of the British commanders on the front lines of the conflict.
Covering the siege of Boston and the battles around New York, the book concludes with the battles of Trenton and Princeton, and their crucial roles of restoring American morale and proving that the Continental Army was capable of achieving victory on the battlefield.
I enjoyed the author's comprehensive view of the landscapes of battle and the personalities making the fateful decisions.

Beautifully read by the author-packed with powerful anicdotes-a must read because it is an ideal way to learn about the American Revolution....
Drudgery. And I have permission to say that now.
I was feeling a little crazy for not being engaged in this
book. The jacket blurbs claimed it was riveting and fascinatingly told. Everyone raves about David McCullough, right? Why was I zoning out while reading? Then the guy who works at my son's orthodontist's office asked me if I liked it and said "McCullough's dry" and I was like YES! How fascinating is 1776, but this history is not coming alive for me. Thanks ortho guy for the permission not to love it.

Was trying to listen to this while reading Chernow's Alexander Hamilton, big mistake. 1776 had a lot more about the british side of the war as well as parts of it's beginings, but it still felt a bit repetivie trying to read two revolutionary war books at once.

This was a very in depth look at the first year of our country's independence. It was full of information that people who like history, like me, find fascinating. It clearly established how amateur the American forces were, and how professional Washington always was, no matter what adversities he was facing. Very interesting, easy to read, engaging.
Audio book and, truthfully, I zoned out a couple of times. Still excellent. The 3rd or 4th American Revolution book I read this year and every one has left me thinking that we really shouldn’t have won that war. Dumb luck and perseverance served us well.
A fantastic book that portrays how difficult 1776 was for the American rebels.
Trust David McCullough to make a story you have heard many times still thrilling.
