Freedman's account of the Montgomery bus boycott is filled with personal accounts and carefully selected photographs. It is well-written, well-paced, and visually pleasing. It included a selected bibliography and index.

Russell Freedman is one of my favorite non-fiction writers. His ability to relate complex historical events clearly is amazing. The citing of all the quotes are all in the back of the book which enables the narrative to flow freely without interrupting the flow of the narrative. Suitable for high school readers , older elementary school students, or adults wanting a quick read about a complex subject there is plenty of substance including a bibliography aimed at various ages.

This is an informative read that personalizes the Montgomery Bus Boycott which kicked off the Civil Rights movement. My 6th grade students have really enjoyed this book and found themselves surprised and frustrated by Jim Crow laws and the denial of normal tasks to Black people (such as choosing a seat on a bus). While it looks like a textbook, it does not read like one. Freedman captures the humanity in this story of struggle and injustice.

This is a good introduction to the event in history for children. It is easy to read and comprehend. The book offers personal accounts of the events of the Montgomery bus boycott and weaves the story in such a way that it is hard to put down.

This book is written for children so although I found the book very comprehensive and not ‘quick’ read it does not get into the details of some of the more horrible aspects of this time in history. It does mention the terrible things that happened and who was responsible, but it emphasizes the strong and courageous people who initiated the boycott and the ones who followed through with it to the end.
I enjoyed this book and feel my child will get a comprehensive look at history told to his emotional level.

LOVED this book. I would recommend it for adults as well because it really gave insight on what was going on aside from just Martin and Rosa, as well as those who refused to move to the back, even before Rosa. AND more importantly, it gives a clear account of how long the boycott actually lasted, which is something many movies and documentaries fail to instill into us.

Carter G. Woodson Award, 2007. Freedman lays the groundwork for the book's main event--the Montgomery Bus Boycott. For 381 days, African-Americans sacrificed and risked their lives for a chance at desegregation. "expertly paced" and "balanced but impassioned."

A very interesting and informative look at the Montgomery bus boycott. Surprisingly comprehensive for such a quick read--I was impressed that it didn't dumb down the violence faced by the protesters.
Even adults can learn from this book. I know I did.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book! There were many unknown facts about the Montgomery bus boycott in here, at least unknown to me! Excellent overview of the historic boycott!
