Four Dead Queens

I was a bit skeptical about this book but I ended up loving it!

The premise is fairly simple: the queens are dead and no one but a thief knows. And it just goes on from there. It’s a fast paced YA murder mystery and I genuinely didn’t know what was happening (or who the killer was) until the end. And oh! What an ending.

It was exciting, there was romance, there was betrayal. And there were secrets.

I will say I’m glad it’s a stand-alone, but I wouldn’t mind reading about the history of the queens more.

J'ai bien aimé ma lecture mais j'ai trouvé le personnage de Kéralie assez...reloue je sais pas j'avais l'impression que tout était forcé avec elle + la romance hétéro bon je m'en fiche comme d'hab. (Mini spoil) Par contre stop killing gay + black people 2020 ?

Conceptually, a wonderful book. The moment I read the blurb I was hooked. And the way it was formatted, with the different timelines working in harmony to build tension was excellent. The author knows good pacing. I was left craving more at the end of every chapter.

Sadly I didn't find most of the characters to be fully fleshed out, and wish that the regions hadn't been used to typecast them all emotionally. I also wish the regions had a bit more depth to them. It all seemed a bit vague, really. My main problems with this book all stem from the fact that it needed more time to build all the things that go along with a phenomenal plot like this. This book could have been longer with more insight into the characters and world and it would have been incredible.

While this book fell short of the potential, I will definitely be keeping an eye on every book Astrid Scholte releases because I reckon she's going to be absolutely amazing.

Wow. Amazing mystery and intrigue. The characters, setting, and plot kept me coming back for more!

I received a sampler ARC of this on NetGalley.

First, let's talk about how beautiful this cover is! It's so simple, but the crowns are freaking gorgeous! I want them all! Can someone please make them for me?!? ^_^ I loved this sampler which contained of the first five chapters. The sampler really intrigued me, and I was definitely left on a cliffhanger and wanting more. What more could we want in a fantasy besides what this book is giving us? Fierce women...check! Murder Mystery...check! New and intriguing worlds...check! Non-perfect characters...check! I have really high hopes for this book and from what I read so far, I am definitely reading it when it is released! I'm intrigued!

I devoured this at the beginning, but the ending fell flat for me. The romance also made no sense.

Fast-paced. It reminded of Divergent, where the world is divided into factions. Here, the kingdom is divided into four quadrants and each ruled by its own queen. Together the four queens rule the kingdom. Really held my interest, and I was sucked into the story.

There are a lot of POVs (6 i think) and some of the world-building is lacking.

I really thought I had pegged who the assassin was, but I was wrong.

Book 4 complete for O.W.L.'s 2019 Transfiguration - Red cover

Initial Thoughts: I did not know anything going into this book other than that I got it in my Owlcrate and people had mixed feelings about it. This book is kind of slow to start, but I really enjoyed the switching between Keralie and the queen's POVs. I also have to say I really enjoyed all the twists and turns. I never knew what to expect and there were many times I assumed one thing would happen and something completely different would happen. I love when a book is able to surprise me and also keep me in suspense. I think a huge part of my enjoyment of this book was the writing style. I really enjoyed how Astrid showed us things and developed the characters. I cannot wait to read more from them and see what they release next. I definitely will be buying more of what they write!

“Rule thirteen: Only a queen may shoot upon the throne. When she takes the throne, she accepts the responsibility to rule the quadrant until her dying day.”
. . . . . . . . . .

A story with a great idea, fun execution, with a twisty timeline and compelling characters but there is just something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on.
I really like the idea of a YA murder mystery overall, and with this book we get glimpses of both the past and present, which gives the mystery a very fun pace. There were some plotholes or convenient omissions, but the story overall was gripping and unpredictable enough that I enjoyed the story to the end.

I will say... it did surprise me sometimes.
