I was recommended this book by a professional leadership consultant at work. This was not as valuable as I had hoped it would be for growing leadership in the workplace. The key concept is valid, but the book could have probably been a long article instead. Adams' key point is to ask questions rather than make judgements when you're working in a leadership position. There are some valuable tools for sure here, but I found the prose "story" style of the book difficult to enjoy.

Powerful lessons and model - crazy worth learning.
Used this model (the Choice Map) for a while now but the book is a newer read.

Would prefer a straightforward book and not a “story” but it was helpful because the lead character was an anti-questions archetype.

Concept: 2.75/5. The concept of this book is to change your life through intentional question asking and a mental model shift. By going from a Judger to a Learner, one is able to shift away from the negative and focus on the soft skills that can set one up for success. It is a system thinking approach that uses questions and question thinking as a key element. An example would be shifting from “what is wrong with me?” to “what do I value about myself?”. The theme of this book is by changing the questions, one can change their results.

The concept was fine but it could have been shorter and more condensed. The writing style itself was not my favorite and the concept was a bit simplistic compared to other mental thinking models I have read in articles prior.

Structure: 2/5. This book has 12 chapters and an epilogue. Each chapter follows an example format about Ben - an employee who is struggling at his job and in his marriage. It is mostly conversations between him or his question thinking coach. The prose uses a lot of example boxes, quotes, and exclamation marks which was not my personal favorite. It is 178 pages of content with a 44 page workbook at the end.

Pacing: 2.5/5. This book is medium to slow paced. The concept is easy to follow but the author is a bit wordy. The example feels drawn out which makes the book feel slow at times.

Overall: 2.5/5 stars but rounded down to 2. This book was longer than it needed to be and I didn’t care for the writing style. The concept was easy enough to understand.

Mood: personal development, self help, question asking, strategic thinking

I love the content in this book. As a coach who works with sensitive deep thinkers, I’ve noticed a tendency to get stuck and spiral in certain unhelpful kinds of questions.

The two most common: why ——-? (Usually a question form of self judgement or the brain’s belief that it must know the root or it must make sense before forward motion or change is possible….which btw is not true).

Simplifying the model and helping folks become aware of their questions tracks and the impact of them, while helping them to identify judger or learner questions has been key for some of my clients.

I listened to the audiobook and was not a big fan of the narrative style presentation of the content and/or the readers voice, but it didn’t get in my way of getting a ton out of the book.

Work-required read. 3.5 stars for the ideas, but OH MY GOD save me from the true life story to sell it all. I could have just used the charts and bullet points.

I waffled between giving this book a 3* or a 4*. Overall, I like the concept and appreciate the unique perspective around Question Thinking. Though the book can be eyerollingly cheesy at times, I think the lessons included are valuable to all, and believe that each of us will get something different out of this book.

Walks the reader through leveraging questions to change your mindset/perspective, and therefore shape the way you view scenarios through the use of a story. This was an effective way to get the point across.

This was a good read and equips the reader with practical questions to utilize in their daily life.
