This author is Mexican American and grew up in a small town in South Texas although most of these stories take place in Northern California. I was reading this book at the same time I was reading John Nichol’s Milagro Beanfield War and there is just no comparison. It’s not that Munoz’s short stories about Hispanic characters is bad, the descriptions are just very one dimensional and a little depressing. Nichols on the other hand made the leap to write a detailed of an Hispanic community that is based magical realism similar to Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The writing style of Munoz just can’t compete with that type of talent.

A good bunch o’ short stories — bonus treat that some of them ended up connecting with each other
adventurous emotional reflective fast-paced

I listed to the audiobook as the author read each story to be reflective, emotional, and ponderous.

The themes about immigration, family, leaving home, and narration was gravitating for me as first generation child and during today’s political climate.

I found myself reflecting and reminding me of my own journey and those generations before me. Gracias Manuel Muñoz por nuestras palabras, historias, y las luchas! 🥹

I had the pleasure to hear from the author at the Alta’s Journal 53rd Book Club meeting.

Thank you, Alta Journal Book Club, for continuing to build community during and after the pandemic!🥰
