Grandes personajes y trama exquisitamente construida en torno a una época interesante para todo español, y más cuando has nacido con la muerte del dictador. No descubro nada, Isabel Allende en estado puro. Por momentos me recordó a "Cien años de soledad". Deja poso.

A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late November.

As detailed and intuitive an Allende book as always, this is about combat during the Spanish Civil War, weakened, injured warriors and uncertain heroes stubbornly living on the homefront while mentally resolving their past transgressions. Basically, everything sucks everywhere, except for people who went to South America to escape the war before it really began, but each group fosters coping, rekindling love and desire over the course of many decades.

Overall a beautiful story about hope, home, identity and love in all its different forms.
I enjoyed most of this book but some of the relationships felt a little forced and a couple of the characters felt flat and unlikeable at times.
The main characters immediately captured my heart though and the overall story is deeply touching and stays with you for a while after closing the book.

Isabel Allende deixa-me sempre com o coração quentinho. Uma história de amor e luta com o Chile como pano de fundo (ou como personagem principal?).

this book was definitely a mixed bag for me. i loved the concept, and the plot: i enjoyed following victor and his family through so many difficult political situations; the spanish civil war, life as refugees in France, then moving to chili, then exile from chilin in Venezuela... the experience of fleeing political corruption was so interesting to read about and to see through the lens of these specific conflicts. however, i struggled with the writing itself - it was so fast paced, i felt like i was receiving character summaries in almost every paragraph. i wanted to know how they felt, and what they thought, not just the actions that took place in their lives. so i would recommend this to people who know little about these specific events, but i found it a little disappointing as i have heard such good things about Allende's writing.

This sat on my shelf for 5 years before I finally got around to it. Glad I did.
