This was....everything I wanted from the final book in such an amazing & unforgettable series. As always, I had a hard time putting this book down. The pacing was wonderful. The emotional scenes in this book, which has a few longer ones than is typical for this series, were well mixed with the action-packed plot scenes. Everything is pulled together beautifully.

Amaranthe is going to stay with me for a very long time. Her growth as a character was so natural that I can't help but be completely taken with her. She's talked her way into my heart and that's where she's going to stay. Forever. (With Sicarius obviously. He had to squirm a little to fit himself in there beside her, but they'll manage. I'm told they like each other quite a lot. ;D If I could just have a whole book of those two being adorable and awkward and in love...well I would pay good money for that. Also children. If there could be those children that Amaranthe may have mentioned possibly wanting to have...I would also accept a novella.)

I'm certain I'll be back to read this series again some day soon. Stepping into the Emperor's Edge universe has always been a mood lifter for me. Opening up one of these books and reading for a few hours takes me away from reality like nothing else. It's so easy to get absorbed into such an exciting story, so much so that the characters really feel like my friends. It hurts to see their story end and I hope Lindsay Buroker will continue to write in this universe.

SpoilerAs a side note, I seriously dig the overlaps between this and the Encrypted series, even though I haven't finished the latest book in that series yet. I think reading it will feel a bit different now that I've made such a strong connection between the two time frames. I enjoyed the part Tikaya and Rias played in the conclusion of this entire series. I recommend that anyone who has yet to read Encrypted do so now, especially if you found the appearance of Fleet Admiral Starcrest and Tikaya a little odd. It adds a little something to the meaning and power of parts of this book when you know & love all the important characters.

This is a favorite, return-to-multiple-times series. Amaranthe and Sicarius are one of my very favorite couples I've encountered over the years. I love them.

4.5 stars. Basically as good as all the others!

SpoilerI knew going in that Sicarius and Amaranthe would be separated for awhile which made me wary because their dynamic is my favorite thing, so less of that is never going to be something I look forward to, and ending the previous book with them separated didn't help. But after the first few chapters, I got over it. I think a couple things helped: 1) we got both of their POVS (unlike the 3rd and 5th books, where they're separated for long times and we don't get Sicarius's POV), 2) starting the book with the separated helped because I at least had them reuniting to look forward to (when they're together for the first half, like in book 6, and THEN separated, I just get stressed out about whether they'll reunite before book's end), and 3) once Amaranthe meets up with Starcrest and then the wizard mentions he's going to have Sicarius kill Starcrest, you can start to see how they're going to converge, so then it's just exciting to wait for Amaranthe to figure out Sicarius is alive and wait for them to meet up again. I was worried Sicarius would be under the wizard's influence for like the entire book and the climax would be him getting back to himself, but thankfully that wasn't the case. So the separation worked better here for me than it did in other previous books.

In non-Sicarius/Amaranthe related things, Books's death was sad! I should've expected that it wasn't likely for the whole team to make it through in one piece, but it was still a gut punch. It's nice that they'll be using his work on the constitution and all that to remake the government, and I loved how excited Books was by the republic and democracy and all of that.

So yeah, I pretty much just love this series. There are two more books after this, but this is pretty much the "true" ending of the series, of all the major arcs (and was originally intended to be the end), and it was a pretty good wrap-up for everything. That being said, I am still glad that there is more beyond this since I was not ready to give up this world after finishing this book!

So after all this time, I've finally finished the series. Well, apparently there's another added? But this one was supposed to be the last one. anyways, it was... alright. I don't know what I was expecting, but I really just skimmed this one. The characters have just... lost their magic for me I guess. I think splitting the forged in blood novels into two was really unnecessary. Books fate was also pretty useless as well, considering how fluffy most of the novels were in the first place. For us to have gone through all that for him... well it sets a good stage for Akystr if he ever is featured in other novels. and there is the whole plot line lindsay buroker could go through with starcrest's eldest daughter and sespian. I wish, however, that there would have been more... well graphic scenes with sicarius and amaranthe. considering linsday buroker wrote pretty good ones in decrypted, after waiting 7 novels for them to get together it was kind of a letdown. i don't think i'll even bother with the next emperor's edge novel after this one.

Oh. my. god. The things that have happened.

I'm going to treat this kind of like it's the final book in the series (because it was going to be originally) and in this aspect it was almost flawless (to me).

It finished everything off so well.

There was so much character development... or maybe I should say people were finding themselves and changing and it was beautiful to watch.

Of course, a person can't read an Emperor's Edge book without there being blood, fighting, and so much risk. *cough* Amaranthe *cough* This book was just as harrowing.

It may have felt to neatly wrapped up in the end to some people. I'm not one of those people because if anything the crew deserves all the happiness and peace they can get.

mini review: great series - read them all. they are all fun. :-)

and now just my thoughts.

if you read my review for books 1-3 you will understand the following. so i am cheap but yay for birthdays! i got some gift cards. they were visa gift cards but i spent them on getting almost the entire Lindsay Buroker (i can never spell her name right from memory) collection.
i have purchased every single ebook or ebook collection that has to do with the world of empire's edge.

EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

this wasn't one birthday it was 2 birthdays and 2 Christmases. cuz i am cheap. i mean, i cannot even lend these books to folks. oh yeah, i guess i could figure out the kindle loan thingee but whateves. i'll tell them to buy them. i read fiction books once maybe twice if it's a series and i need a refresher.

i love this world and Sicarious and Aramanthe and Sespian and Maldynadoand aeverybody else in these books. (i only checked the spelling on Maldynado's name.) so i enjoyed every short story and every full novel. a few things might be unbelievable or repeated scenarios but whatevs. i loved them all.

the author says in some book (don't ask me which. i have read them alllll!) what her influences are. the tv shows she names are ones i watched and loved and you can feel their influence in her characters and plots. a-team, macgyver, buck rogers, star trek, stargate sg-1, etc.
i do love her books becasue they do remind me of these shows which i loved as a child.
