First things first - this is a mislabeled book. It's marketed as a crime thriller, and a crime thriller it is not. There is a crime, there is a mystery and there is even a twist at the very end - an unexpected one, I must say.
But ultimately it's a somewhat slowly-paced book about family history, depression, struggle to find oneself, with a murder as a backdrop. As such, it's a exceptionally narrated book with a great setting and partially unexpected ending. The happily-ever-after part is obvious nearly from the start, whodunnit part genuinely surprised me.

"Entry Island" by Peter May was quite a decent mystery set in the Magdalen Islands and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The locations provided an evocative and atmospheric background to a strange murder investigation.

Entry Island is an intriguing crime novel interspersed with fascinating flashbacks into the characters’ family histories. The past and the present come together at the end of the novel in a satisfying, if slightly predictable conclusion. The reader is easily drawn into this well written, atmospheric novel and all the emotions experienced by the well depicted characters. Thanks to Quercus and NetGalley for the ARC.

Not bad. I enjoyed parts of it. Found the connection between the two parts rather far-fetched though

Good detective crime fiction with an interesting fusion with historical novel. The characters are interesting and both stories, present and past, are engaging. As with previous work from Peter Mayr, an Island becomes almost one of the main characters of the novel.
I found the ending a bit forced and therefore would give it 3,5 stars, one step lower than his previous job with the great Lewis Trilogy.

I read this after enjoying Peter May's Lewis Trilogy. I loved the Trilogy, perhaps because I listened to the audio books where the Scottish accent added to the deep sense of place. Entry Island is set in Canada and while the remote island setting is similar it didn't capture my imagination as much as I had hoped. It was almost 2 novels in one - the main plot being the investigation of a murder on Entry Island and the second being the diary of an ancestor of the main character. Perhaps it was because I'm not a fan of historical fiction that I found myself skimming the diary portions. I enjoyed the murder mystery part of the book more, and liked the ending where the history and current investigation came together.
