what a beautiful story that focused on the hardships POC faced in the early 1900s. with a heavy focus on romance as well but amazing subplots of racial equality - this did not disappoint!

as someone who loves a good will-they-won't-they slow burn story, i ate this UP. i mean seriously you get four different chemistry laden plot lines to get excited about! i don't even think i can pick a favorite, because each character had such interesting thoughts. ruby and harrison are so precious, and i love how their story played out.
olivia's story was more reflection than romance, which i loved. although we saw john's story through amy-rose's view most, i think reflection was his point as well. i REALLY would love to see those two cross paths again - helen and lawrence not so much tbh, they had cute scenes but i didn't feel as MUCH excitement with her chapters. her skills are priceless at a time like this and i really hope her family sees that and she's able to join in the business decisions, we can focus on romance later!

the perv in me would've loved more intimate scenes, especially with the tension these couples had, but i can't complain! i want everyone i know to read this :)

This was the romantic escape I needed! Olivia, Helen, Amy Rose and Ruby are intelligent, thoughtful and ambitious young Black women in early 1900s Chicago, looking for love, purpose, and happiness. PG enough for younger readers, but delightful writing that adults will also enjoy.

The inspiration for the story was better than the story itself. I felt like the many POV’s we got actually acted as a hindrance to the storyline because each POV had to be so quick in order to avoid making this book super long. The characters felt flat and one dimensional and we never truly got to know any of them.

Set in Chicago in 1910, this historical fiction book explores the Davenport family. As one of the cities most respected families and one of the few Black families to achieve wealth, the Davenport daughters are expected to behave a certain way. The book also explores the story of Amy-Rose, the mixed-race maid hoping to open her own salon to serve Black women in the community. I enjoyed the historical aspects of this novel, especially the characters who were based on lesser-known real life people. It felt a little long to me but I think it will be interesting to follow this family through the years as the series progresses.
