”I have survived. I am here. Confused, screwed up, but here. So how can I find my way? Is there a chain saw of the soul, an axe I can take to my memories or fears?”

This book has a rather tough subject matter. Surprised the hell out of me that I actually enjoyed it. Gotta love Melinda’s character for how willing she is to give her former friends a second chance without letting people continue to walk on her at the end.

I liked this more when I was a kid, but as an adult, it does not hit quite the same way. It does not help that my copy has highlighter and commentary. I hate when people desecrate books.

It is a good story. It gives good insight into how trauma can present physically and mentally through silence, isolation, and self-harm. This is not a light read, but if you are open, it will help you to develop more empathy toward those who have experienced trauma.

this a book that i read in school when i was 13. this book still really sticks with me. i found me copy at home and finally reread it <3

I am obsessed with how this book was written. Written is an interesting term, because really it is all thought. It feels like you are thinking. I love all the minor details in this book - those she cares about get names and those that don’t matter as much to her or that she dislike don’t. Subtle character growth is something I will always praise an author for, and while some of it in this book feels a bit sudden, for the most part it is steadily progressive. Well Done.

A dark but very powerful novel. I've had it on my bookshelf since I was in high school, and I'm happy that I finally read it. I knew the premise of the story before reading it, still worth reading at least once. Definitely an important message for youth to help them understand relationships, friendships, and consent.

I'm a bit concerned that this book might lead people who were sexually assaulted and are trying to convince themselves to speak up about it, to think no one will believe them unless and/or until it happens where there are witnesses and/or if they end up with visible wounds/bruises. Wouldn't recommend reading this if you're in this situation.
