“we all grow into our coffins, Danny”
god what to say about this book. nothing happens in this book until everything happens. it was easy to put down and then I couldn’t put it down. it was astute and sensitive except the climactic scene was melodramatic in its violence. the plot sometimes strains my credulity but the bones of the story are truthful and speak to much larger concerns about society and austerity and the discontents of our postindustrial age. it’s a slow burn of a book, emphasis on slow and emphasis on burn. read it.

An engaging story about some kids growing up in an unconventional household, with some class warfare thrown in for good measure.
Great read, really took my surprise. Was really expecting a slow, family in the woods type story set in the 19th C., but this was contemporary or at least late 20th C. It was a kinda minute story with small town rivalry, and the plot didn't really get cooking until the halfway point. By then, the rest of the narrative felt...inevitable. The brutal ending I did not anticipate, either, and reminded me precisely of Straw Dogs--of someone pushed to the limit, and the violent counter-reaction that creates. Solid!
Just not for me, I guess. I don’t get why this is so well-regarded. No character development, so little plot. It is very descriptive if that is your thing. I just didn’t care about anyone in it, really.

I don’t think I’ll remember reading this. It was fine. Wouldn’t recommend but I’ve read a lot worse
Not sure what to think of this. I had to read quite some pages to understand the kind of novel this would be. It was fine, but as many contemporary novels unsatisfactory as a whole.
