Wow. This was so stunning. Intense and beautiful and deeply moving.

An incredible novel, all the more so as it's a debut. Fiona Mozley's work is deep, and powerful, and spirited, and intense, and bleak, and poetic, and so incredibly full of heart and hope. Elmet was shortlisted for the 2017 Booker, and deservedly so. I have no doubt that this writer has a Booker in her future.

This book is beautifully written but I hardly know how many stars to give it. The last third or so can’t hold a candle to the preceding chapters and this is why I am giving it only three stars. The last two pages of the book are deeply touching.

While the first part is lyrical and absorbing and the characters are compelling, there are a number of unresolved actions in the last part that left me up satisfied. The story of a father and his two children is narrated by the younger child, Daniel, who draws you deeply into the life of his family.

i enjoyed reading this but it felt incomplete

Quite a surprise! A feral, fiery, brutal and brilliant old style dark fairy tale. There is an underworld to the quite and peaceful little British villages, right under your nose, invisible, cruel and fascinating. There are people, born to inhabit this world, to fight and die in it without ever being noticed or having any kind of connection with ordinary law abiding folk. It's a dying world perhaps, but it is also a lot more vital, and the hot blood that runs in the veins of its people is readily shed, for sometimes there is just too much life to contain in a small fragile body.
Well written, dry and poetic in just the right measure.
Beautiful narration in audio version, too.

Liked it a lot better than the actual Booker prize winner to be honest.

Where did I hear about this book from? What made me so intrigued to the point that I knew if I saw it at the used bookstore I would have to buy it? I went in not remembering why I was ever interested in the book and I don't like looking at summaries before reading after I've decided it's a book I'd like to read. And I really should have because wow I was bored bored bored. This just isn't the type of book I ever read so idk why I picked it up, idk why I was interested! Ugh, just not my style of book at all idk.

Deeply atmospheric, which I appreciate. Meandering at the start, which almost made me drop it. I'm glad I didn't.
