im sorry im a whore for boy obsessed trope and boy falls first IM SORRY I HAVE ISSUES
usually hate how authors write the enemies/academic rivals to lovers trope but this one was perfect
This started out pretty strong for me. Enemies to lovers book always have such explosive chemistry. I really liked the book for the most part but it turned into something a lot angstier than I was hoping for.
I think it started to go downhill for me around 60ish%. Hamilton is a really pretentious entitled jerk in the beginning. Then they started kissing and doing other stuff in the midst of their typical arguments. That was great. I did start to feel a little frustrated with how they both were immediately ‘this never happened’. That back and forth built a lot of hot tension but eventually I was ready for them to actually figure out how to make their situation work out for them long before they got there.
Then when they finally did realize they wanted to figure it out I hated that they both tried to keep it a secret. I want my H to scream to the world that his h belongs to him. It’s not that I don’t understand their reasoning but I would have felt better about it if he fought for her instead of being a coward.
The forbidden relationship element, the hiding and secrecy and family drama was just a big pile of angst. We also have a breakup, separation and reconciliation proceeded by a not terrible but still inadequate grovel. I hate that plot device and I hate that authors hardly ever give a good grovel. It was a relatively short separation but miserable all the same.

This is my first book by either of these authors, and I’m obsessed with their writing style. This book has just the right amount of angst and redemption.
Boy, did I hate Hamilton. At first. He’s superficial, only caring about pedigree and he looks down on Gwendolyn because she’s adopted, so she doesn’t share her family’s “blood”. He’s so convinced he’s always right. He feels entitled to every single thing that’s been handed to him. He doesn’t realize that he’s just regurgitating the values that his father has ingrained into him since birth.
Somehow, as the book progressed, I started hating Hamilton less. He has some redeeming features. He might actually not be an inherently evil person. He might not be completely incapable of redemption. He might be worthy of love.
I loved how this book gave me all the feelings. It feels far more realistic than other books that deal with similar matters, mostly because of the way that Hamilton is portrayed. He’s an awful person, and the authors aren’t making up excuses for him.
5 stars!

What a great story
What a great story. I’m used to the feisty girls, but many of them are assassins, etc. While they are being ostracized, they also have some hidden ability to wreak havoc. This story really is about the underdog, though. The girl who is feisty but has been “cancelled” by her classmates - the result of the head Devil making a call. What happens, though, when the girl and the Devil clash? It becomes an amazing story where each of them pull back the layers of who they are and show that change is possible.
