I like this book, but I definitely think the show is better. I think Gone Girl is a better book, but Sharp Objects has a really messed up family dynamic that is very interesting and very creepy. Pretty unique murder mystery too. Overall, enjoyed but yeah the show is way better.

Singlehandedly the darkest book I've ever read. I was compelled by the main character and the fact women in this book could be so unapologetically evil and dark. I do think a lot of the darkness was established for shock value more than anything (Amma in particular didn't make much sense to me) but overall an incredibly compelling and hauntingly cruel read. It's got serious bite to it, that's for sure.

I genuinely hated this book I would not have read this if Sofia didn’t annotate it for me. Tbh her annotations were what got me through. I’m terrible at predictions but I guessed the plot so damn quick and the mediocre twist at the end was not enough to redeem this even a little bit. Reading this was so deeply unpleasant and I felt sick the whole time lol.

The narrator for the audio book was perfect, Amma sounded like a southern Azula and it fit her character perfectly. The story had me on edge even though I knew  the ending. There were many times where I was so angry with the protagonists choices, but I get why they were included to show her declining mental state.

This may be upsetting to survivors of sexual assault, as her perspective is to victim blame, despite

having not processed that she was a victim herself.

There are also many depictions of hypersexual children as young as middle school.

It's a very disturbing book - but impossible to put down. There's just something in the way Gillian Flynn describes all the dark and horrible things that happen. Would probably be a 3.5 star read if it wasn't for the ending, it left me very satisfied.
