Q: What would you do if your brother wasn’t who you thought he was?

In this spine-chilling gothic murder mystery set in gritty Victorian-era London, an intrepid society girl finds herself inescapably embroiled in the investigation of a ghastly serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life. Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

This is actually quite out of my comfort range when it comes to genres, I’d say it’s historical fantasy mystery. I’m not a huge mystery lover, they seem to bore me because I always end up not knowing what’s going on (when I read, my brain goes bye bye) and I’m also not the world’s greatest fantasy lover, I like it in little pieces. However I absolutely loved this!! I loved the relationship between Audrey and Thomas and I honestly thought it was Thomas (that’s his name right?) for the majority of the book and I was very shocked to find out that I was very very wrong! I never wanted it to end, I loved every minute of it and I cannot wait to read more from the series when I get to them! It seems to be a running theme with Maniscalco’s writing that I go into them thinking I won’t love them but come out of them absolutely adoring them!

This was such an amazing book to finish out my reading challenge for 2017 with. It took me longer to finish than I would have liked, but that's college for you. This take on the murders of Jack the Ripper is so well done, and Maniscalco even has author's notes in the back to explain any discrepancies with history. Regardless of any stretching of the truth she may have done for this book, it's amazing and I love these characters dearly.

Also I'd go to war for Thomas Cresswell. He's definitely in my list of book boyfriends now.

Can't wait to get started on the sequel!

A Gothic late 1800s murder mystery. It was well done but ever so creepy.

The historical fiction novel was quite the disappointment. Maniscalco does not create a connection between the readers and her characters by failing to abide by the classic "show not tell" rule that we're all taught in first grade. The book's use of language and analogies is juvenile enough to be cringe-worthy, making the characters' personalities painfully cliche and the progression of the plot achingly dry. The killer is quite obvious from the beginning of the book, as he or she seems to be the only person that Audrey Rose does not announce her suspicions about. I truly loved the idea behind the book and wanted to embrace it, but as an English major, I couldn't make it past the diction l too to be able to enjoy the plot. I'm one to push on through a series until its end, but unfortunately, Hunting Prince Dracula will be removed from my book shelf.

La nota de la autora se llevó el libro. Es fascinante la forma en la que logró amoldar los eventos reales en el libro, transportándonos a un contexto no tan alejado de la realidad.
En este perfil amamos a Thomas Cresswell.
