It was fine except for the plot. Why is she so invested in getting his body? That's the whole emotional arc of the book and yet I never felt like it was justified. I kept thinking "why won't she just listen to him and chill out?" It needed more explanation for why it mattered.

Second Grave on the Left is the second installment within the Charley Davidson series. I slightly regret jumping into this because I last read the previous book about two years ago. So, yeah, I definitely didn't remember what happened beforehand and just winged it.

The one thing I have going for me though is liking Charley. Her sarcasm gives me joy and it just isn't fair with how often she's targeted by the bad guys. Just saying. Like her, I took this book at a stride because honestly, I had no other plan.

It also doesn't hurt that we get Reyes in this either. Although, I will admit that I'm slightly mad that we didn't get more of him. He really goes through some shit, and I need him to be safe and sound please. Plus, their romance needs more because I'm just not satisfied right now.

Don't get me wrong, it was good but I'm just being greedy right now. In the end, I'm definitely going to jump into the next book but maybe re-read the first book beforehand. Maybe. Who knows.

So the formula for the Charley Davidson stories seems to be: solve the mystery of the day which turns up through Charley's PI gig and advance the story-line/romance between Charley and Reyes aka the son of Satan.

I wouldn't rate Volume 2 quite as high as I rated the first book, but still a solid "really liked it". This installment didn't grab me as much with the mystery of the day - the whole solving the disappearance of Mimi dragged a bit and the side story of dead trunk guy was kind of underwhelming.

Still the story was light and fun - although a few times Charley's witty quips did rather annoy me a bit - sometimes you have to take some things somewhat seriously. I like the originality of Charley being the Grim Reaper - but it's also somewhat frustrating for a semi-supernatural being - to be so clueless about what they're capable of. I kind of wish she'd spend less time making stupid jokes and more time figuring out how to be a bad-ass force to be reckoned with.

Some of the specifics of Reyes's back story seem a bit sketchy to me, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief and not ask too many questions. I will say that Rey'aziel is a much cooler name than Reyes. I also wasn't 100% on board with Charley's actions at the end of the story - talk about thinking you know better and completely disregarding someone's expressly stated wishes - I can totally see why he refused to see her.

I will finish the series and not entirely because I got the first 6 books for $1.99 each on an Amazon deal of the day.

In stead of being "the most hilarious read of the Summer" as the jacket claims Charley came across more immature and annoying than funny. Reading her dialog was like having a conversation with a 15 year old boy with ADD and I would rather hang out with her "boring" older sister more than I would Charley. The whole narrative lacked focus because of too many story lines and they all suffered as a result. One main missing persons case with the overarching Reyes story-line would have been enough but with an extra murder mystery and a homicidal ex-con on the loose there was just too much going on. I couldn't wait to be done with this book and I probably won't stick with this series.

I sort of got off on making bad guys sweat. Which was not unlike my love of making good guys sweat, just by very different means. ~ Darynda Jones
