Why have I not read this story earlier? I love Agatha Chrisie and unlike her other novels this one reads more like a thriller.
kidnapping, murder, multipe identities, espionage, double crossings, blackmail, and government take overs = excellent reading
I caught on to the identy of the mastermind before the finaly revelations, which thankfully did not happen in a Marple, company sitting around for tea style. My modern sensibilities of not trusting people at face value might have helped me along. Today we could have just googled a person's name and been able to verify their identity. This story would not have worked in todays world with smart phones being able to snap a picture and send it instanly for a eyewitness to verify.
It was a good story.
Synopsis:
Tommy and Tuppence are unemployed after the great war. the put their last shillings together to make an advertisment for hire. An unusal name overheard in convesation propells them into a plot that could toppel the English government. Far fetched, but it really is just the catalyst to get it the ball rolling in this story.
A group of foreign nationals who want to see all capitalist governments fall have a coup planned. A secret treaty is lost that could destroy the english government and both parties are on the hunt while a mastermind whose identy is unknow to all but a select few as Mr. Brown is always a step ahead.
Conclusion
Mr. Brown is the lawyer James. ..name I forgot b/c i listened to audio book.
Jane was faking amnesia and she hid the treaty by using water magazine paper to stick to the back of a painting in the bad guys headquarters where she we kept prisoner for years.
Tommy and Tuppence end up together, when they both realize they have always loved each other and it isn't till they think the other is dead that they realize it. by the way their little non romance is better than twiligh.
Julius is the real multi millionaie and in his awkward way saves Jane and Tuppence whisks Jane away to take care of her.
Tommy accepts a lucrative job with the government

This one read so easily, it was great. Loved the wit and humor!
The book was interesting, it had the usual Christie charm and humour. The red herring was a clever one.. I kept reading i knew who the villain was but was totally wrong!
A silly spy novel. It's a fast read and a bit ridiculous, but fun. The ending is pretty obvious from about halfway through. but it's still an enjoyable read.

I always associated [a:Agatha Christie|123715|Agatha Christie|http://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1321738793p2/123715.jpg] with her more popular characters, Miss Jane Marple & Hercule Poirot. And I did, at one point, believed that I've read all her books in my teens though I wouldn't be able to tell you which titles as I read them in Bahasa Indonesia. It's really only in the past few years that I realised she's also written books that are NOT part of the Marple or Poirot series. Tommy and Tuppence are rather entertaining to read though totally not of Marple's/Poirot's class. They kind of bumble through their problem solving though it seems their dogged persistence more than often pays out. This first installment introduced them as old childhood friends who are straitened by circumstances (financially) and decided to do something about it. One coincedence after another (btw, do you believe in coicidences?), they got involved with 'espionage' in saving the country, the world, and at the same time, found love. In essence, more of cute mystery than a twisted whodunit.
This was my 1st AG book , and though back then it was my favorite book , I've grown from that phase and the plot was predictable . That being said I still have a soft spot for this book and decided to give it a 4.
