I don't know why I kept such a bad memory of this story. I read it oh so many years ago and I never really liked the Tommy and Tuppense series that ran on TV at a time, yet I want to re-read everything by Agatha Christie. Why ? Mmmmm... Just because. No particular reason.
And I did right because I really rediscovered that couple and liked it a lot. They are lots of fun together, with extraordinary adventures happening to them. Even though I usually loathe espionage stories, this one delighted me.
Quote :
"Take my luggage down."
"Yes, sir. Going away, sir ?"
"I'm going to the devil," said Tommy, regardless of the menial's feelings.
That functionary, however, merely replied respectfully :
"Yes, sir. shall I call a taxi ?"

a rather simplistic whodunnit. I may have outgrown this
I keep thinking of all the mystery novels I have read that have probably been influenced by Christie but none of them come close to what she did.
Unfortunately this book comes from Agatha Christie's early period and contains more than her usual amount of Bolshevist-fear and anti-Semitic stereotyping.

I got lost a few times during this novel, unsure who was where and who knew what. In addition, people in this novel are much cleverer and more quick-witted than the majority of people I know, which gives me an uncomfortable sense of inferiority. Aside from these things, though, this is a fun audiobook for neighborhood walks, cleaning the kitchen, and assembling blank timelines for homeschool purposes.
Lovely little gem from Agathe Christie. Read it in one sitting. Would have loved more romance between Tommy and Tuppence. The cases were engaging and was tied up very nicely.
Just a little, light fun. Bit different from a lot of hers, but somehow reading it was refreshing.
*cackle* This was the FIRST Agatha Christie book where I guessed the ending halfway through the book! Buahahahaha!!! Rather than be upset by this, I am actually quite excited. Christie's works have always kind of annoyed me in their opaque-ness - (I mean, really, is the reader supposed to have ANY idea whodunit, or is every ending coming out of left field? At this point while reading her books, I just guess that the least likely person to be the murderer, is the culprit.) Anyway, I'm stupidly proud of myself for guessing the ending, and I don't care what anyone else thinks! Ha!
On to the book, though. I was DELIGHTED with the characters Tommy and Tuppence! I'm sad that there weren't more books written with them as the detectives, but you know I'll be snatching up the rest of them real quick! As a typical Christie masterpiece, the plot was a bit convoluted, with lots of red herrings, side paths, and twists. But also, as usual, the mystery was fantastic! Highly recommend!
