A satisfying sequel to The Dictionary of Lost Words, which I loved. A good historical fiction portrayal of WWI. Of the characters, I was especially intrigued by Maude’s communication patterns, which seem to represent a larger message. I’ll need to think more on that.

I have fallen in love with Pip Williams and her writing. Just so beautiful and inspiring and emotional and moving.

This was a beautiful accompaniment to the dictionary of lost words. It was lovely to fill in some of the gaps.
Particularly as you see the Dictionary of Women’s Words be put together and see another side of Gareth and Tilda
. I loved TDOLW so much it was a joy to be back in that world even if it meant reading about war which I always find heartbreaking.

I felt this book was a little more raw and exposed the real tragedy of war in a way that was only touched on in TDOLW.
I am sad that Peggy and Bastiaan were apart in the end. It was probably the right move for the story but I wanted them to share their lives together forever

There was so much beautiful character growth in this book. It made me appreciate with a privilege it is to be a woman in this century (though we still have a ways to go), I appreciate that I am free to get an education and that it is a privilege to be studying, even when it doesn’t feel that way.

Will be reading more Pip Williams when I next get the chance!

A well-written and believable cast of humans with their own characters and development over time.

I can't believe that I never considered before that all the town war memorials I've visited only commemorate the men who fought

Interesting characters, a poignant take on a familiar war, with both British and Belgian perspectives, and a great insight into the roles women played and how they could change. I also loved the continuous theme of helping others in a selfless way.
