I doubt there is a clearer way of explaining all the counterintuitive findings of physics. The metaphors are extremely well chosen and the writer is so nice to completely leave out all the mathematics underpinning the different theories. Still, I struggled quite a bit, especially after we leave Einstein and general relativity and move into the quantum world. By the time we reach quantum gravity - supposed to be the main theme of the book - I had to read every page twice at least...healthy to be reminded every now and again what truly great minds are!

Holy Smokes this was a good book. The first half was about the state of present knowledge and the second half was about competing theories of quantum gravity. I learned a lot about the ancient thought on physics that was lost in the Dark Ages. Then later I learned a lot about the loop quantum gravity although I can't say that I fully understand everything about it.
As you can see from the amount of time taken to read this, (well over a year...!) I found reading this somewhat of a struggle at times. Not that the book isn’t good, or incomprehensible, the fault rather lies with my brain and it’s lack of capacity to understand the world of quantum mechanics, spin foam etc.
The last couple of chapters, on what information and knowledge truly mean, and the conflict between science and religion, resonated with me particularly.

This is a good book, I guess... I just couldn’t care less about the subject matter.
i love the way this man writes about theoretical physics. i read his 'Seven Brief Lessons on Physics' (the shortened version of this book) and had to read this afterward. I look forward to more. I give it only 4 stars because chapter 6 and 7 were difficult for my brain to fully understand. The other chapters were mind-blowing but more accessible. His inspiration from classical texts and early philosophers also brings beauty to science and reminds us that inspiration and scientific thinking are built on the backs of earlier thoughts and findings.
So what do you do on New Years Eve? You get schooled by Rovelli on everything quantum related.
I have a limited scientific background but Rovelli's enthusiasm leaps off the page. Rovelli takes you through the history of how we have developed theories and solutions.
The read is challenging, engaging and when you finish, well I certainly had a greater appreciation of the developments that have been undertaken.

This was totally fascinating and the chapter near the end on time just about broke my brain (in a good way).
