Thought-provoking, timely book on current state of American politics. Breezy writing. Written by a liberal (co-founder of Vox) and experienced political journalist, but sparing no one (especially our own self-perception of being rational). Calls on group psychology studies aptly applied. Outstanding.

We are so locked into our political identities that there is virtually no candidate, no information, no condition, that can force us to change our minds. We will justify almost anything or anyone so long as it helps our side, and the result is a politics devoid of guardrails, standards, persuasion, or accountability. ~ Ezra Klein

Ein Buch über die Zusammenhänge von Polarisierung, Populismus und politischer Radikalisierung in den USA. Insoweit interessant – aber gleichzeitig auch wenig anschlußfähig für die europäische Situation.

three stars because if I have to read twitter threads all strung together into a book, then you lose a point.

Offers a solid overview and summary on the academic literature on polarization in U.S. national politics. His original ideas aren’t as strong as the research he surveys, but Klein is keenly aware of his limits and fesses up almost every time he gets in over his head (I hate concluding chapters, he writes in his concluding chapter, but he does the concluding chapter stuff anyway). Very insightful book, by turns depressing and inspiring. I like the way Klein’s career has developed and his voice has matured.

Klein does a nice job providing some of the historical context for the deeply polarized political parties of today. This book is written for a more general audience and he does a good job covering important information without losing his main arguments. After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of why our current political party system looks the way it does today. The why is much more complex than I would have thought and I'm now more interested in reading some of the books cited by Klein to learn more about the topic. This book is definitely a worthwhile read and a good starting point for anyone interested in the topic.
