I quite enjoyed this, although not a lot happened. It's been on the library book pile for a long time (longer than I care to admit, although the man at the library has shamed me into reading the ones I've had out for the longest) and it happens that it crops up just a few books after I read the Fishing Fleet - which is about India and this also has references to India and colonial times so it seemed to fit with my current reading well. I'm not sure I'll be looking for anything else from Vita Sackville-West - it's meant to be her best book, I read it to improve my knowledge of 20th century classics and because I'd never read any of her books so I've already achieved my goals with it!

This is what I call a quiet read. Lots of Character Introspection. I preferred the action.  Lady Slane's children are trying to control her life. "They treated her rather as though she had had an accident, or had gone temporarily off her head." And she's all <b>"think how much I shall annoy my children!"

As a gardener, I am more familiar with Vita Sackville - West  the Garden Designer. First time reading her fiction. I've had this on my TBR since 08-19-2019. I know this because the receipt was in the book. Not one for the Forever Shelf. If I ever want to read again I would go with Kindle copy.

Enjoyable read. Perfect for a rainy morning.

"Having a fund of quietness within herself, she could understand that other people also enjoyed being quiet."

Every page of this book was delightful. It's short, witty and provides a thought-provoking insight into the motherly duty, family sacrifices and old age. Vita Sackville-West has the gift of engendering vivid impressions of characters in few words and eloquently presenting undulations of thought ("trains of thought" feels much too explicit) spanning a lifetime in only a matter of pages. Not only was this book amusing, but I really enjoyed the feminist undertones: untold female stories, the perceived value - or lack thereof - of older women and identity issues that spring from marriage and motherhood.
