My kids love Mercy and her shenanigans.

It’s pretty cute to see Kate DiCamillo’s slightly dark humor adapted to a younger audience!

My only complaint is that "Eugenia" is too difficult a name for my daughter to read and remember!

Mercy Watson is a pig and she loves toast with lots of butter. She gets into some silly situations but things always turn out right in the end. Mercy helps Mr. and Mrs. Watson when their bed falls through the ceiling. It's funny how she ends up helping them but I'll let you read to figure it out.

The Watsons are an odd couple - their family pig is sung to sleep by them every night and, in fact, can do no wrong. Well, there are some parents like that with their children, and don't the kids usually turn out to be spoilt brats! Mercy Watson however, is a pig, so we can forgive her for being only interested in her stomach and comfort. And this book is very funny so I won't turn it into a moral lesson when I read it to the grandchildren.

The story is another take on Judith Kerr's [b:Mog the Forgetful Cat|1152265|Mog the Forgetful Cat|Judith Kerr|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328876460s/1152265.jpg|2410270] (where the cat unwittingly saves the house from being burgled and is given a medal for it). Here, Mercy both causes the problem in the first place, and then, through her single-minded pursuit of food and then fun, manages to save the day.

As I said, this is very funny, the illustrations are hilarious and in wonderfully bright colours. Great for primary school children.

Small Addendum:
Read it to the kids today - they loved it! I clearly must get another out of the library.

Mercy is a pig who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. Every night they sing to Mercy as they tuck her in. This makes her feel as warm and full as if she had been eating hot, buttered toast which is her favorite. But she doesn’t like the feeling after they close the door and go to their own room. One night she gets in bed between them. Everyone is comfy and dreaming. They are all awakened by the bed beginning to sink into the floor. Mercy hops off the bed hoping to get some hot, buttered toast like she had been dreaming about. The Watsons think she is going for help.

There is no toast in the kitchen so she heads next door hoping that Baby Lincoln (who is not a baby, but an older woman) will give her some sugar cookies. She wakes up Baby who thinks Mercy is a monster. Eugenia, the older sister, who believes pigs belong on farms, calls in an emergency. While Eugenia is chasing Mercy in the yard (Mercy thinks it’s a game), the firemen come. They hear the Watsons calling for help and rescue the Watsons just before the bed falls through the floor. The Watsons are convinces Mercy orchestrated the whole thing and everyone sits down to hot, buttered toast.

This is very funny for kids.
