My Summer of Wes by Missy Welsh

This really was a sweet, enjoyable and light read. I only have one negative thing to say; it is too short lol!

I loved how a very shy, quiet and introverted young man (Mal) met the outgoing, friendly and definitely 'out' neighbour (Wes). The realisation of being gay himself and falling in love was very well written. Also Mal's growth into a much more confident person was lovely to read.

There was a lot of sex going on...but we are talking about an 18 year old guy here and I didn't feel that it was sex for 'sex's sake'!

I would love there to be a follow up story of how college life and beyond was treating these boys!

4.5 Stars I was waffling between 4 or 5 stars so did the halfer. :)

Lord, but I loved Wes. Loved Mal. HATED Mal's parents. Loved Wes' family. I loved watching Mal develop his first friendship and felt so joyful when he finally realized that it was more! But by the end of the book, a sense of melancholy settled over me because, while it is HFN, I fear for Wes... realistically how many of us end up in a HEA with our first crush? Oh Ms. Welsh, it's all your fault. Throwing that girl at Mal when he knows so little about himself yet. ;)

I think it was a mistake to read this now. I've found myself getting more and more impatient with M/M books of late. They are starting to remind me of Harlequin Romances: cheap, easy, quick, shoddily put together and monotonous. Finding one that genuinely engages me is becoming more difficult, which makes me sad because M/M books were my escape from traditional romance. I don't think this book was meant to be anything more that a quick, easy read, and readers were meant to treat it with a light hand and forgive its flaws. I just wasn't in the mood to let this slip past with a 3-star rating.

It is overly sentimental and the whole plot seems to revolve around the 2 MC's having sex in as many not-to-creative scenarios as they can imagine. There is some attempt to ground this sex in some framework of a relationship, but really, the cover sums up the book nicely. The characters aren't really solid. In fact, they aren't really any characters of consequence other than the MCs and the bullies who dutifully gay-bash. There wasn't really a plot, more a rearranging of scenes in which they have sex and then express flowery sentiments ad nauseum. Rinse and repeat. There were too many exclamation points...the characters were perpetually astounded it seems.

The writing itself wasn't bad, but there wasn't enough here to convince me to simply label this enjoyable fluff. It is only 100 pages or so, so really you can take it or leave it.

2.5 stars but it was perfectly fine for the most part. It's an easy read, but there were a few things that bothered me. I waited too long to review it to remember the details unfortunately! It touches on a few difficult topics to read about -- bullying, intense homophobia, religious-based homophobia -- and I'm thinking it wasn't a particularly sophisticated approach to some of those. That's a hard line to walk without getting super angsty, though, and this ultimately wanted to be more of a sweet romance than anything else. Which is fine.

Susan said I could burn this book, so...

My Summer of being fucked by and fucking Wes was saved from being one starred by the sheer fact it was unintentionally funny and provided some good fap material.

An epic buddy read orgy with my ladies, Susan, Tara, Karen, Heidi, Cristina & Elsbeth! (With Sonia just joining in with the orgy part. Also, pretend we're boys when looking at this gif, okay? Thanks.)

Original read in 2010

I was hesitant to read the new version, but I loved it as well. You get a deeper insight into the characters, though the whole v-blog thing felt a bit over the top.

This book was surprisingly hot for an NA. I would definitely call it an erotica, which I wasn't expecting. I was expecting more of a coming of age story, which it was also but not the focus.

This was also very romantic. Wes and Mal were great together and I loved how they took care of each other. Sometimes Mal felt silly because Wes babied him so much, but I thought it was very sweet. Especially during the scene after Mal got beat up. It's because they started out as friends and those kinds of romances are just the best. I also really liked seeing those who were sympathetic and helped them, such as the paramedic, the cop, and the nurse.

I am glad that this story covered more of a time period than I had at first expected, and we got to see a bit more of what became of them and how strong their relationship grew. Especially when you read the short Spring Fling story along with it. My only complaint is that I wish Mal had told his parents. I know that they would have been assholes about it, but I still feel bad for Wes. He didn't mind, but I find it hard to believe that it didn't bother him at least a little.

This book is like a warm embrace on a cool fall evening. You cannot help but love Wes and Mal.

This was free and I mainly kept reading/skimming because it was about a part of Ohio I'm very familiar with. This book is kind of an amalgamation of bad cliches about m/m books written by women.
