Excellent, useful financial breakdown for twenty-somethings at the start of their careers. I made a lot of changes as a result of this book and am feeling excited and empowered. The chapters on retirement and investing were still too complicated and jargon-y, though, leaving me feeling like I need to find another book to explain them more clearly. Overall, though, I’m really glad I picked this book up as it has helped me make a clear budget, set my financial priorities, and choose financial services that get me the most for my money.

The reason this got 3 instead of 4 stars is because of the irritatingly cutesy writing style (hashtags and cheeky references to margaritas etc) in an effort to make it relatable. Additionally, though the financial advice is useful for anyone, Lowry’s audience is so obviously intended to be upper-middle class college-educated white women (based on her cultural references etc) that I’d feel awkward recommending the book to anyone else.

Another solid book by Erin Lowry. I just really love how informative her books are. Especially how, with this book, you can flip to any chapter and get the information/advice you need. You don't need to read the whole thing cover to cover (even though I did). Do you want to learn about budgeting? Chapter 4. Investing for retirement feel impossible? Chapter 16 my friend. Feel like your salary doesn't reflect the job you do? Chapter 14 is a great start. This whole book is a great start in fact! Anyone looking to dive deeper into their own personal finance should give this a read.

Quick review while it's fresh on my brain...

I think this book is a great resource for any beginner wanting to learn about finances. This book is tailored to millennials so the vernacular may be a little offputting to someone in a different age range.

Erin has a lot of great points in this book and it's definitely a great refresher.

for someone who literally didn’t know the first thing about money or how taxes work or how investing works or what a 401k is, this book really helped me (a clueless 23 year old) :-)

I wish I would have read this book at least ten years ago, although younger me probably would have been even more annoyed with all the millennial jokes.

Mostly read this because I was curious about her book on investing, and figured why not start with her first one? Luckily, most of this book didn't tell me anything I didn't know, but I did learn some things here and there, and appreciated her general guidelines on budgeting and savings goals.

Would I recommend this to other people well into their 30's? Probably not, unless that hypothetical person was financially clueless and needed to start at the very beginning. But it would be extremely helpful to anyone just starting their post-college life.
