The parts of this book that focus on J.K. Rowling's edits and original manuscripts/art are incredibly interesting. However, that's only about 20% of the book. The rest of the book is one long history lesson. The illustrations are gorgeous, but they're mostly lifted from the book covers and Jim Kay's illustrated editions (translation: they're nothing new). Some parts are more interesting than others, but overall it was pretty dull.

i listened to this on audiobook, and at times i definitely felt like i was missing out not having visuals to follow along with when they talked in detail about images from centuries-old texts on magical lore or sketches and paintings of Harry Potter-specific scenes. on the other hand, it was cool to hear the different voices of experts, curators, and clips from the Harry Potter audiobooks (both the British and American versions were quoted at different times). I probably won't re-read this but it was nice and interesting to listen to while I knitted and worked on a puzzle.

So I finished this a while ago and forgot to review it. And that says much of what you need to know.

The book is packed full of information and actual research on how magic and history and science relate to each other, and it's all from the British library exhibition on this very topic. But it is really boring. Believe me, I don't understand how it's possible either. Something was sorely lacking in translating the (most likely amazing) work put into the exhibition - maybe the metadiscussion or maybe depth or maybe logic. I really can't put my finger on it.

I could imagine it as a nicely illustrated coffee table book, though.

Some parts were interesting, but overall it was really underwhelming.
I’ve listened to the audiobook, and even though Natalie Dormer’s narration was flawless, there was this one curator who annoyed the hell out of me with her laughing at every sentence, and really ruined the experience.

This is a book meant for a true Potter Head. Save this book for after you've read the entire series once or twice, maybe 3 times. There may have been some spoilers along the way so definitely wait to read this one. With that being said, if you are diving deeper into the Potter world back story and the ins and outs of the fiction books, illustrated books, audiobooks, etc. then this was really good! So much insight from so many hands that helped make the world of the Harry Potter phenomenon. Of course it all started with JK Rowling but there's so much inspiration she pulled from centuries before, and this gives a peak into a lot of the storytelling, folklore, and legends from the past.

Loved the audio version. But I felt like the jumping around to the different subject was a bit confusing at times.

What is there to say?! I absolutely loved it and wished I could have gone to the exhibition....
