Ugh. I made it. I MADE IT! PHEW.
I don’t know how this EVER managed to get published (well actually I have a strong feeling good old Mr. Money had a hand in that) but I finished it. This was meant to be a fun nostalgic ride - my 13 year old self was all about Twilight - but after just a few chapters I was on a mission! A mission to finish this and review it because I cannot possibly understand how you can dare to portray something so problematic as romantic to a YA audience! It was like watching the Netflix show YOU only that in this story nobody seems to have a problem with the guy stalking the girl, thinking about murdering innocent people because the are annoying and being possessiv and patronizing. EVERYBODY IS COMPLETELY FINE WITH THAT!!! „Oh Edward, what’s up? Off to stalking Bella again, watching her in her sleep without her knowing while thinking about how delicious she tastes? Aww you dork, how cute, have fun!” *WTF*
Trust me, knowing what Edward is thinking, will NOT make you like him. In the first half of the book, I was just completely in shock and couldn’t believe that this was actually what I was reading. It was so unbelievably stupid and problematic that I started to laugh out loud multiple times because HOW can this be taken seriously - this has to be a joke... right? But nope, it‘s not, it‘s real. While in the second half, the psycho-stalker-murder-Edward is replaced by corny-possessive-patronizing-Edward it just drags on and on, repeating the same streams of thought over and over again. And again. And again. And again and again and again and again. We get it. Bella is soooo self-less. And sooo special. And you are sooo dangerous. And sooo selfish. *dramatic sigh*

But on a serious note - if you want some Twilight nostalgia, don’t read this book. Pick up the first book or something to satisfy that Edward sized gap in your teen-memory-cravings, because after this, there will be no more gap. There will be an icky feeling of „wtf did I just read“ and you will have wasted 750 pages (!!!) on a story you already know told in a more problematic, boring and dragged out way than you could have imagined. Do yourself a favor and do not pick this up.

So um, I did not finish this, I’m disappointed in myself for even starting it. I only wanted to start it because it apparently made Edward less of a stalker? Nope. No way. Edward is still a freaking vampire stalker that sneaks into an innocent girls bedroom to WATCH HER WHILE SHE SLEEPS. Because every normal person does that. I will admit, it made Bella less annoying, probably because I didn’t have to listen to her clingy sad discussion about “does Edward like me? I wanna be a vampire” blah blah blah. The only good thing about the whole twilight series is that it can be great for a good laugh. *Useless rant complete*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE.

Me putting this book down 1 chapter in:

What little free time I have to myself these days is not worth wasting on whatever the hell this gratuitous piece of crap is supposed to accomplish.

ok, so there is absolutely no reason why it took me six months to read this behemoth. no reason at all. i'm just painfully slow.

this was nice. i haven't read the twilight books in over ten years, but re-reading the beginning of the series from edward's perspective was nice. he's a lot funnier in his own mind, and there's a lot more depth to him and even bella after reading this. i'm tacking on a whole extra star just for how outright funny some of the thoughts he had to deal with are.

it'd be kinda rad, i guess, if stephenie wrote the rest of the series from his perspective too - but i can't guarantee that i'm gonna wait a whole decade for her to do so.

I found this book much better by the original Twilight by a landslide. The original Twilight didn't give Bella much depth, but I find that seeing her from Edward's point of view gave her some. Seeing that she did have a personality- kind, selfless, etc. In Twilight you don't see any of that. She also seems more humorous when from Edward's point of view. We get things in this book that we didn't get to see in Twilight- like when Edward is asking her tons of questions about her favorite books, movies, etc. I don't remember reading Bella giving him many answers, what I remember is "Edward continued drilling questions as we..." or what have you. Hearing her answers and reasoning, I feel that I liked her a little more (becacuse I definitely wasn't a fan of her character in Twilight, and that only got 10000x worse with New Moon and 1000000000x worse with Eclipse.)

Yes, Edward is a creep. Yes, he stalks her. No, I don't condone this. If this happened in real life, I'd be appalled.
(So why am I always rooting for him? Must be the nostalgia of my "Twilight phase" in middle school.)
Seeing the process of trying to hunt James and the process of trying to get to Bella in time in the end was super interesting too, and I found myself enthralled by the fast cars and cover ups (no matter how unrealistic lol.)

I was also super pleased to be privy to the mental dialogue that happens between Edward and the rest of the Cullens, and it made me like Jasper and Emmett a ton more. It was really interesting to see Jasper's power more closely. And Alice and her backstory! I wish we had books for them.
(I could give less than a shit about Rosalie, I have empathy for what happened to her but I can't help but hate her character.)

Overall, I know this is a cringey series. I can't help but have a huge soft spot in my heart for it though, and Midnight Sun expanded it further, and now I'm sad I don't have more.
