A really heartbreaking story! I really liked Caroline and Herta’s chapters; for some reason listening to Kaisa’s chapters I got lost and confused more often. I loved how they were all interconnected and I definitely will check out the two companion books!

This is the first book in the series. I love the cover of this book but have no idea why the author chose this picture. I feel it has nothing to do with the story. There are a lot of true historical facts in this story. There are three POV's. Caroline is an American who is a real person. Doc Herta is a German who is a real person. And Kasia, a Polish that the author made up. It was hard to listen to the POV of the doctor and how it really didn't matter what atrocities she did to the prisoners. This was definitely not an easy read, and it was hard to get into at first. It is a very long read. I recommend reading the author's note after the story.

Could not get into this book. Might’ve been the narrator. I got 5% through it. This is the 2nd time I’ve tried this book because I keep hearing great things.

A well written book but with unnecessary points of view. I feel had the story just followed Kasia and Herta slightly it would have been fine. Caroline's story separately could have been a decent romance book itself. However it ended up falling flat because it didn't add to the plot. I wish it had been more focused.

I'm super shocked and very disappointed by this, since I was expecting a heart-wrenching historical drama set around WWII and the Holocaust. But after several hours of listening, I'm still not interested or connected to any of the characters. In fact, I seriously dislike Caroline's chapters with all the name-dropping and uppity dialogue and her "romance" to a married man?! Not for me. Maybe it gets better, but it already felt like a huge miss for me.
