Jane Steele is a young woman in nineteenth century England, who reads a book called Jane Eyre]and sees in it some similarities in their circumstances, inspiring her to write down an account of her own life. And there are similarities, from the cold aunt to the harsh boarding school to her later job as a governess. But while they share similar personalities -- both are loving and loyal and brave -- Steele has a decidedly different reaction to mistreatment, which results in her needing to avoid a detective named Sam Quillfeather. She's still shocked by what she finds in her employer's cellar, but her willingness to take action will be necessary to save that same employer from the man from the East India Company.
This novel is written in the style of a Victorian novel and despite the protagonist's propensity to needful murders, retains that feel through out. I enjoyed it enormously. Jane is a wonderful character and the way the novel echos and diverges from its inspiration was a lot of fun for this Jane Eyre fan. This is well-written entertainment.

As Jane Eyre week continues, this was the first book I thought of when I knew I was going to do this week. I went to the signing for this book a bit ago and it has sat on my shelf because even though the author said I could read without reading Jane Eyre I knew I would want to do Jane Eyre first before reading this one.
Overall this book was a great adaptation of the book and I loved how it was formatted exactly like Jane Eyre. With three volumes that divide up the story, it was fun to read a story in that format again. I absolutely loved that Jane Steele clearly referenced and referred to the original work Jane Eyre, she was obvious in the way that she spoke about Jane Eyre and I liked the transparency.

AND the last book of 2017 was a winner!
Picked this one out at the library in the "librarian's recommendations" section. This one has to be one of my favorites I've read this year. Jane Steele is the author's rendition of a murderous Jane Eyre, though I have never read, I now most definitely want to! I loved the main character and heroine, Jane Steele. I much appreciated her dry and sardonic sense of humor, as well as her willingness to take things into her own hands. This is a page turner, and a lot of different storylines are going on but Faye seems to effortlessly connect it all together in the end. I will be reading more historical mysteries in 2018 I believe, all thanks to Jane Steele.
