My Heart Hurts, but it's a Story that Needs to be Told

I have read many, many books about World War II especially books about the Holocaust. This book will make your heart hurt so I'm going to go ahead and warn you about that but at the same time the characters in this book are so young and so pure that this story needs to be told over and over.

The story is about a little boy name Bruno who moves from Berlin, Germany to Aushwitz in Poland. His father is made commandant of Aushwitz but Bruno doesn't really understand what that means.

Bruno meets Shmuel and creates a beautiful friendship. The purity between the boys is wonderful. They learn about each other but neither one of them really understands what's happening. They just know that they have become friends even though they are separated by not only race but a barbedwire fence.

I will recommend this book over and over again.

More often it seems that we forget about some of the children involved in the Holocaust. We know that there were many victims but until Boyne's novel, I had not thought of the possibility of a child on the other side of the fence, like Bruno. Though a well-written reminder of the horrible events that happened, this novel got me thinking about another perspective and really, what more could I ask of a piece of literature than to make me think about that I otherwise wouldn't have. A definite must-read!

Disappointing, to say the least. This book is condescending, patronizing, and the narrative is insipid. The characters lack depth, self recognition and intelligence. It bothers me greatly that Boyne's Bruno is portrayed to fit every single stereotype of children as stupid and lacking perceptiveness. He manages to give us a bland depiction of what a child in a concentration camp would be like and the contact with a nazi regime child who is absolutely selfish and blind to everything that happens around him. Bruno is even unable to pronounce or understand his own language and the current situation of his country, which, at that time, would probably have been quite impossible. I expected a lot more from this book.

8/10. I couldn't give this a ten. I would've ,but i can't. Why would the author do this to me. Do this to the reader. We were so close to. Only a few pages away from a happy ending. I should've picked a different book for my English project but what you can you do, I'm now sad and disturbed.

I've heard people say that they either really liked this book or really hated this book. Some have said that it was brilliant, others have said that it's patronizing. Personally I liked it. Before I even knew that it was written by an Irishman, I could recognize the... I'm going to call it the "Irish Voicing." It's a very distinct, simple style. I've found it in McCourt, Joyce, and a couple of other Irish writers (names I can't recall right now.)
So, even though the narrator is 3rd person, they seem to share a voice with the main character, in this case Bruno, a very young, German kid who's father is the commander of "Out-with" (presumably Auschwitz) during WWII.
Very well written, and very powerful statement about the insanity of that time. Worth the read.

Towards the end of the book I was beginning to think that the book wasn’t long enough but once I got to the final chapter I realized why. I should’ve expected it but I didn’t because I didn’t know what the book was about when I started to read it. I didn’t think I would like this books so much but I did.

I highly recommend this on audio. I am still digesting. It was just so incredible.

I was aware this book would be terribly sad, but did know how sad until....

Absolutely heart wrenching.
