El hombre de hojalata

How did I manage to read my new favourite book of 2024 on January 1st??

3.5, possibly nearing 4, I'm obviously undecided.

This is a love story. Love in every form, in all seasons, between all people, shifting and changing, yet consistent and true. Michael loves Ellis. Ellis loves Michael, even openly for a time. Anne marries Ellis. She loves them both. Mabel and Dora love both the boys. Michael "loves" many boys.

For such a short read/listen, this was truly beautiful; complicated in the subject matter yet simple and concise in the telling.

Heartbreaking. And so human

This book is so gorgeous! It broke my heart a 100 times but also glued it back together again.
Third time this year that I've given an author another chance and ended up LOVING it.

It is about a somewhat unrequited love story, it's about grief, hope, relationships, loneliness, loss and a tonne of other things.
I found it absolutely beautiful, profoundly moving and heart warming. I cried a lot. I'm an easy cryer in general, except when I'm reading. But this one cut straight through my stone cold reading heart.

This wasn't long, but the tale told within is touching.

short, sweet, and touching

DNF the audiobook at 25%. I may try the ebook later on but for now, I hated the narrator’s voice so much I couldn’t listen to more of it.

I saw another review that described this book as being about love in all its forms, and that just about sums it up. There are two main characters who are long term friends (and once were something more) and the book checks in with them at various time points. It's a short novel with sparse prose where most of what we learn about the characters is told through tiny vignettes. It falls into the "not sorry I read it but wasn't sad when it ended" category.

Heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking. I found myself near or in tears more often than I’d expected. Gorgeous prose. Beautiful metaphorical arcs. Just devastating. And an absolute must-read.
