Tin Man is about the intertwining of love and friendship. We follow Michael and Ellis, through present day and little flashbacks, from boyhood to adulthood. We watch as their relationship unraveled and came back together again.
I don’t know if I actually liked this book if I’m being honest. It’s beautifully written, but something was missing for me- it’s very literature-y (that’s a word I just made up but let’s roll with it), which made it harder to really dive in emotionally. Additionally, the style of writing shifted page to page, making it feel disjointed. However, the exploration of friendship and love is beautiful. Perfect when paired with a veggie pesto sandwich, chips, and a view of the beach. 3 ⭐️

Very good, a lovely book, imo! It's not perfect, but I'm giving it full stars because I think it might be a new fav.
For once, I think a book should be longer, though.
I wish we had a section on Annie. I wish we got to see more of the three of them in their life together and more of Michael and Annie together. I wonder whether there were editor notes to pare things down a bit. It felt very clear to me that this was a three-way love story, complicated by the order in which the love developed. It seemed like there were little things thrown in to be like "don't forget it's about Ellis!! Don't forget it's about Michael and Ellis!!" when I think the book wanted to be about all of them, together and their pairwise relationships. The book felts most like itself when talking about the love they each had for one another.

I’m seeing the swooning stellar reviews here, and I’m wishing I read the same book. There were moments of tenderness and beauty, which is why I’m giving this three stars, but overall this felt like the outline of a story and characters that I got to read about through a screen. I couldn’t quite see them or grasp them; everything felt slightly out of reach the entire time I was reading it.
The style of writing also kept me from fully enjoying this book. There is dialogue, but there are no quotation marks; it all just kind of flows together. The effect is almost dreamlike, which perhaps was the author’s intent, but it kept me from fully sinking into the story.

2.5⭐️
that was weird asf.
I felt so detached all along, so I didn’t feel any depth of emotions whatsoever. However, I appreciated the writing style, it was quiet and peaceful. I especially liked the way Winman describes the tiniest details (sometimes it’s too much though), things we experience on a daily basis but rarely see written down.
It was a good enough book. Idk if I’d recommend it seeing as I enjoyed it but didn’t love it.

Looking for a short book to squeeze in before the end of the year? Might I suggest this little gem?
TIN MAN follows childhood best friends Ellis and Michael and explores the paths in life not taken. With themes of navigating loss and the blessings of friendship, this is a small book that packs a big emotional punch. The prose was sparse but poetic and I have an affinity for authors who can say so much with less.
Sarah Winman is the author of the 2022 release, STILL LIFE, which I unfortunately missed this year. This small but mighty book has me reconsidering passing STILL LIFE up (100% because of the length).
Thank you to WHITNEY for sending this book my way!
