Wow. Interesting book. Gives insight into Russian government which goes beyond corrupt to just plain evil. Also interesting to see the ties to our government.
If you’re interested in how Mr. Browder came to be an investment banker as well as the corruption which led to the murder of Sergei Magnitsky, and the subsequent US law titled the Magnitsky Act, then you will enjoy the book. If you’re not interested in the author’s lengthy back story you can skip roughly the first 20 chapters to get to the story of Magnitsky. I would have preferred if the first twenty chapters had been condensed to 1-2 chapters.

Surprising amount of drama and corruption - book did a great job keeping me engaged. One of the better non-fiction books I’ve read in a while.

Browder's writing is a little too plain and straightforward for my liking—which is fair, he's not a writer—and at points I felt like I maybe wouldn't be his best friend in real life (his describing himself as a "kid from the south side of Chicago" is generous; I think he struggles at times to flesh out the women in the book; some of his stories ending in "and when I was done, everyone at Harvard clapped and cried" seemed self-aggrandizing, if noble). But at the end of the day, the story is bonkers enough that it's probably worth a read. That said, if it doesn't pull you in fairly quickly, I don't think it ever will, and you should probably move on. I enjoyed it though.

Very interesting look into Russia and how Putin runs his country.
the story itself was very interesting and I learned a lot but the author’s voice/personality was… not my fav
