My first time reading the book and I absolutely loved it! It was not as difficult as I thought it would be and I feel like I got even more out of the themes, character development and inner feelings, and relationship development than I have from the adaptations. I really enjoyed getting to read my favorite scenes! Austen is just as witty and frank as her characters and many ridiculous scenes made me laugh out loud. One of the best love stories ever - can you imagine a man changing his manners, helping your sister from a terrible situation, and helping your other sister get with his friend all after you rejected his marriage proposal because he still loved you so much?? Crazy.

I tried really hard at this one. My book club all wanted to read the same book together and this is the one they selected. I had a very difficult time with the myriad of characters in the story, especially since some of them had first names AND Miss [Last Name]s. I also had a very difficult time caring about all the rules of this society. Elizabeth HAS to agree to two dances with Mr Collins because if she doesn’t she can’t dance with anyone else? That’s stupid, fuck off with that…Miss Bingley is appalled that Elizabeth walked to her house and got her dress muddy? Come on…I just did not have the patience for this, so I read the spark notes to see what happened the rest of the way.

This was my 184th book finished in 2025.
Hmm, I find this difficult to rate and review. It was definitely out of left field for me to pick this book up, but I'm trying very hard to expand what I'm reading recently.
I knew this book is not something I'd normally like, but I did try to enjoy it. I can see and appreciate the wit and humour layered into the writing, and it's obviously unique and special to be written by a woman from a woman's perspective - especially for something from 1813!
I just found it a little tricky to really engage with the characters. The gentry class is a little alien to me, so the settings and the way they spoke to each other was a bit difficult. Example, Mrs Bennet referring to her husband (even to his face) as Mr Bennet. Ah, it's just weird to a modern ear. I'm not slighting it at all because of this, it's just an example of why I found it hard to get along with.
What I found curious was the way the writing flits between characters speaking, and then the narrator filling in a line or two, and then switching back to the characters' speech. Hard to think of another example I've read with this.
Look, I liked the setting, but I find stuff like Bridgerton just a bit more entertaining...
I'm going to give this one a middle score, because I didn't like it too much, but I respect the book.

i expected more detailed descriptions of raw romance since I understood this to be a book about courtship (it was published in 1813 so my hopes shouldn't have been as high i guess.....) 2/3 of the book is everything BUT Darcy and Liz
even so, with every next chapter i felt more attached to the characters. there wasn't much world building per se, but i think the multi-page letters made the book feel alive. besides, i found darcy's psyche very interesting and relatable to reality.
the last few chapters were incredibly funny. it's just a very pretty romance with intellectual stimulation included.
