Damn, but Pickett's charge was a gut-punch. One of the bloodiest battles in American history brought to visceral life through the eyes of the heroes of both sides.

Pardon me while I sit down and rock slowly back and forth.

...So I may have spent the entire book thinking that Armistead and Hancock were totally gay for each other. And then being thrown off when they talked about loving their wives. And then being pissed when Armistead died because they would never reunite with one another. =(

The only other story line I was invested in was Chamberlain's (mostly because I wanted his brother to survive).

I might have missed the point of the novel.

good war books get to me, and this was no exception. As much as I hate how much I sympathize with Confederate generals (moved to near tears twice, both from the Confederate side. sad), it’s impossible not to; Shaara humanizes the soldiers as effectively as I’ve ever seen. Doesn’t quite hit the highs of Matterhorn, nor does it approach the perfection that is All Quiet on the Western Front, but it is worthy and effective. A fantastic book. 7.5

Enjoyed the story and the characters, but the writing wasn't the best. The tenses were sometimes confusing, the fragments sometimes distracting. But it was very cool reading The Killer Angels in Gettysburg and recognizing landmarks in my hometown!

My rating hails from 8th grade, when I read this for English class. I hope to reread this eventually to see if my opinion has changed at all.

Great book. Probably one of the easier ways to read about the Civil War is in Historical Fiction form.

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. It's all about battle and fighting, and that's not the type of book I usually pick up; however, I thought this book was fascinating. I learned so much about the battle of Gettysburg that I never knew before or had forgotten from my eighth grade history class. While reading about what happened to Chamberlain on the top of Little Round Top I was amazed by the will of those men and what they accomplished. I still may not know the difference between a corps, division, and a brigade, but I now understand more about the motivation and decisions of both the South and the North in regards to Gettysburg. Shaara did a great job of describing what it's like to be in that kind of battle--at least he made it come alive for me.
