This series doesn't disappoint!

I really really loved the setting and the mystery, but the personal drama brings it down for me a bit. While realistic, it just kind of drew my attention away from the mystery. Still loved it tho.

Also, fuck you David ✌

Look, I know that the book is YA, but the teen drama in this one was really too much. I really liked the mystery, especially the setting and the characters, and I honestly would have loved to read a book just about the Nine. The dark academia vibes were immaculate. The ending could have been better (it was too out of the blue, I think), but I really liked how the mystery was slowly solved in stages.
But the part about Stevie and the gang was really boring to me and I really didn't care. Nothing really happens with them, except at the very end (and that's a cliffhanger I didn't really need).
I think I will read the next book because I am curious, but after the trilogy the quality of the books has been declining, in my opinion.

Did I like this book? No
Will I still read the next book? Unfortunately, yes.
First of all, the fact that Stevie keeps circling around the same character flaw with no change and repercussions is very frustrating. Every time, it feels like she decides to stretch the truth to convince her friends to go along with her bad choices, they get hurt she apologizes, rinse and repeat. That and her love interest is as unconvincing as all get out- that cliffhanger at the end? Why are we focusing so much on this really undeveloped romance in what is supposed to be a mystery series?
I did love the mystery in this one - as much as it was bogged down by the rest of the plot. For that reason, it gets two stars rather than one and it's why I'll still read the next one; Johnson writes good, compelling mysteries - even if her character development leaves much to be improved on.

David Eastman is kinda the scourge on this earth so I hope he gets some HEARTY comeuppance in the form of Stevie launching her foot into his face. I’m still Team David here, but his character development is truly regressing. Aside from that, I was a fan of the British setting however there were a lot of instances of Johnson just spewing details and facts about London/London history and it very much bogged down the writing. For the first time in this series, I felt the urge to skim passages.

One thing I LOVED about this book in particular was The Nine. What a fun cast of characters. Yes, they’re very toxic but I enjoyed reading their sections and I was actually looking forward to them compared to Stevie’s chapters.
