I don't know if this series is particularly good but it's definitely fun. And cool and interesting and there are tons of things to nerd about. It's packed with plot and characters and worldbuilding and there's so much in these books but it's just fun. The prose is easy and accessible without having the immaturity that most YA prose does (to me).
I can't believe I was so used to queerbaiting that when I read this book for the first time I was still doubtful if it was going to go all the way like wtf was wrong with me

Something about the timeline/POV switching didn't work for me (in this book). It felt very distancing, and I just...didn't care that much.

4.5 This is a complex, frame narrative with more than one pov, unreadable narrators. Is it fun to read? Yes, reincarnation, mimicking, shifters, past lives, gods, dragons... possessing...(call what you want). Who is the brother to who or uncle or father maybe he's... uncle?
I like the main character, Jenn Lyon, who writes fun male characters. I am glad that my first contact with this author's work was Sky on Fire because it showed me that she knows where she wants to go with her characters and world building. I am definitely going to finish this series as well.
The audiobook is fun too, especially when the wizard interrupts K and T to tell us their perspective of reality of what happened is not always real.
If you want to understand all just reading once this book, you'll be frustrated.
A good start if you're preparing to Malazan series after this.

The writing was so incredibly juvenile, in the bad way. The fact that the main character is literally in handcuffs, naked, being sold as a slave, and the entire environment was so blasé was so stupid. What do you mean he's being sold as a slave and he's cool as a cucumber?
Superbly epic. But the two simultaneous narratives was really not necessary. All it did was drag the pacing of the book down. Things really heat up in the final arc, so trust me when I say hold on. It'll be worth it.
